Can you believe we are already almost halfway through the NHL season? There are quite a few players who are currently running away with it points wise, and the All-Star break is right around the corner.

There are quite a few surprising names on here in the top five, including a famous Sabre and Star. With that being said, here are the top ten NHL players coming into 2023.

Honorable Mention

Mikko Rantanen

Team: Colorado Avalanche

The Moose has been loose in Colorado all season and has almost single-handedly kept Colorado afloat while their stars have been injured.

With Mac, Landy, and Nichuskin out for a significant amount of time, the Avs number one winger has had to be the first line center from time to time. In 38 games this season, Mikko has scored 26 goals and 22 assists for 48 points.

Best NHL Players Right Now Rankings

10. Kirill Kaprizov

Team: Minnesota Wild

Kirill the Thrill has been a sensation on the wing for the Minnesota Wild since coming over from Russia. The Wild used a 5th round pick in 2015 from the Bruins to take a shot at him, and boy has it paid out.

So far this season, Kirill has 23 goals and 25 assists for 48 points in only 28 games and has shown no sign of slowing down. He will be representing the Wild at the 2023 All-Star Game.

9. Matthew Tkachuk

Team: Florida Panthers

I have never personally been to Calgary, Alberta, or even Canada. From the pictures, it looks like a place I would love to live.

Matthew Tkachuk was traded from Calgary to Florida in a pretty controversial trade. Since coming to Florida, he has picked up right where he left off last season.

Thus far in the campaign, he has scored 20 goals and 28 assists for 48 points in 37 games. The Panthers have taken a massive step back this season, but Tkachuk’s performance awarded him with an All-Star appearance.

8. Jack Hughes

Team: New Jersey Devils

Jack Hughes is finally coming into his form with the Devils this season. The young center is certainly starting to live up to the first overall pick pedigree.

Hughes' season ended early last year, but he is about to eclipse the point total in the coming weeks. So far, he has 26 goals and 23 assists for 49 points in just 40 games. This performance earned him his first All-Star nomination.

7. Erik Karlsson

Team: San Jose Sharks

Erik Karlsson is certainly a player that has been surrounded with controversy during his career, particularly around his departure from Ottawa.

Karlsson has definitely been able to silence some of his critiques this season, with a league leading 54 points among defensemen.

So far, he has 13 goals and 41 assists in 41 games. He will be representing the Sharks at the All-Star game, and I am not sure he will finish the season there.

6. David Pastrnak

Team: Boston Bruins

What else is there to be said about Pastrnak? He is possibly one of the greatest wings in the NHL right now and certainly creating another generation of talent across the world with his play.

He may also be the steal of the 2014 draft. In 39 games this season, Pasta has scored 29 goals and 25 assists for 54 points.

5. Jason Robertson

Team: Dallas Stars

Jason Robertson has been the sweetheart story for the NHL this season, at one point he was leading the NHL in goals and outscoring Connor McDavid.

Drafted 39th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Robertson has been a steal for Dallas. So much so, he will represent them at the All-Star game. In 40 games this season, Robertson has scored 26 goals and 29 assists for 55 points.

4. Nikita Kucherov

Team: Tampa Bay Lightning

Nikita Kucherov is back at it again, and right where he is used to at the top of the NHL stats. The Lightning are playing with a chip on their shoulder this year after being denied a three in a row Cup win.

While the Lightning aren’t in the top ten in the NHL at the moment, Kuch is. In 38 games this season, Kuch has scored 14 goals and 41 assists for 55 points.

3. Tage Thompson

Team: Buffalo Sabres

Sure, the Blues got Ryan O’Rielly and a Cup, but that was never going to happen in Buffalo. Buffalo did get a prospect at the time named Tage Thompson. After some time in the AHL, Thompson came up in 2020-2021, albeit ended by covid, was unimpressive.

In 2021-22, he exploded, and has had a meteoric rise ever since. In 37 games this season, Tage has scored 31 goals and 25 assists for 59 points in only 37 games.

2. Leon Draisaitl

Team: Edmonton Oilers

Leon Draisaitl is off to another incredible season, and at the moment, is not attending the All-Star weekend.

Even though the Oilers struggle to find consistent players to be around McDavid, Leon has held the second line with RNH together. So far this season, he has scored 22 goals and 40 assists for 62 points.

1. Connor McDavid

Team: Edmonton Oilers

Connor McDavid, unsurprisingly, is off to another great season with the Edmonton Oilers. Even with his great play, the Oilers are in a Wild Card spot at the moment.

This season, McDavid has scored 33 goals and 43 assists in just 41 games. McDavid is for sure going to have an amazing season, but the jury is out on whether or not they will achieve anything in the postseason.
