Ranking the best boxers of 2022 to crown the Boxing Male Fighter of the Year

There were so many boxers in 2022 that stood out but we had to narrow it down to 10. Was it one exciting performance and accomplishment in the year that could take the #1 spot like being the undisputed champion such as Jermell Charlo?

Remaining undefeated like Shakur Steveson, “The Monster” Naoya Inoue, or Ryan Garcia? Or doing the impossible like defeating a Pound for Pound great like Dmitry Bivol? To see where these great fighters rank in 2022 see below.





Honorable Mention

Shakur Stevenson

For Shakur Stevenson, 2022 has been somewhat of a rollercoaster. He was having an amazing year and won both of his fights. He won the  WBC and vacant The Ring super featherweight titles after defeating Oscar Valdez.

However, he missed weight before his next fight and was stripped of his titles. Though he doesn't make it to the rankings, he deserves an honorable mention.

10. Canelo Alvarez

Title(s):

  • WBA Super Middleweight Super Champion

  • WBC Super Middleweight World Champion

  • IBF Super Middleweight World Champion

  • WBO Super Middleweight World Champion

  • The Ring Super Middleweight World Champion

Canelo Alvarez has also had a good year. He started the year by moving up to light heavyweight to fight Dimitry Bivol for the WBC light heavyweight title, however, he lost the fight.

Canelo ended the year with an impressive win against  GGG in a massive trilogy fight. He still holds the undisputed super middleweight world championship.




9. Ryan Garcia

Ryan Garcia is one of the biggest rising stars in boxing today, and this year, he has proven to the world that he has the skills to back up his hype.

He fought twice in 2022, against high-level opponents and won both fights. He defeated Emmanuel Tagoe, and Javier Fortuna, and now has a fight scheduled against Gervonta Davis in April of 2023.




8. Errol Spence Jr.

Title(s):

  • WBA Welterweight Super Champion

  • WBC Welterweight World Champion

  • IBF Welterweight World Champion

2022 has been a good year for Errol Spence Jr. he only fought one this year, however, it was for a world title.

Errol Spence Jr faced off against Yordenis Ugás and added the WBA (Super) welterweight title to his name. Now, he is the unified WBA (Super), WBC, and IBF welterweight world champion.




7. Artur Beterbiev

  • WBC Light Heavyweight World Champion

  • IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion

  • WBO Light Heavyweight World Champion

This year, Artur Beterbiev only fought once, however, it was an important fight for his career. In an incredible performance, he knocked out Joe Smith Jr. and added the WBO light heavyweight title to his name.

Beterbiev now holds the unified WBC, IBF, and WBO light heavyweight titles, and will be defending them against Anthony Yarde in January of 2023.




6. Jermell Charlo

  • WBA Super Welterweight Super Champion

  • WBO Junior Middleweight World Champion

  • IBF Junior Middleweight World Champion

  • WBC Super Welterweight Super Champion

  • The Ring Junior Middleweight World Champion

Jermell Charlo has also had one of the best years of his career. He only fought one, however, it was for a world title.

Jermell Charlo already held the unified WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and The Ring light middleweight titles, and this year he defeated Brian Castaño to win the WBO light middleweight title as well, becoming the Undisputed light middleweight champion.




 

5. Juan Fransisco Estrada

Title(s):

  • WBC Super Flyweight World Champion

  • The Ring Junior Bantamweight World Champion

2022 has been an amazing year for Mexican fighter Juan Francisco Estrada. He fought twice and won both times.

In his first fight, he defended his super flyweight title against Argi Cortes, and in the second, he defeated a long-time rival, Román González, and won the WBC super-flyweight title as well.




4. Tyson Fury

  • WBC Heavyweight World Champion

Tyson Fury is one of the best boxers in the world right now, and he has had an incredible 2022. He fought twice, making two title defenses of his WBC heavyweight title.

He knocked out Dillian Whyte, and Derek Chisora to finish off the year, and called out the unified champion Oleksandr Usyk. So, his next year might be even more impressive.




3. Devin Haney

Title(s):

  • WBA Lightweight Super Champion

  • WBC Lightweight World Champion

  • IBF Lightweight World Champion

  • WBO Lightweight World Champion

  • The Ring Lightweight World Champion

Devin Haney has had one of the best years of his career in 2022. He won both his fights this year and became the undisputed lightweight world champion.

He already held the WBC title and defeated George Kambosos Jr to add the WBA, WBO, IBF, and The Ring titles to his name. Haney also had a rematch against George Kambosos Jr, which he won impressively via Unanimous decision.




2. Naoya Inoue

Title(s):

  • WBA Bantamweight Super Champion

  • WBC Bantamweight World Champion

  • IBF Bantamweight World Champion

  • WBO Bantamweight World Champion

  • The Ring Bantamweight World Champion

2022 has been an incredible year for Naoya Inoue. He remains undefeated, winning two fights, two new world titles, and becoming the Undisputed bantamweight world champion.

He started off the year by knocking out Nonito Donaire to win the WBC title and ended it by finishing Paul Butler, adding the WBO bantamweight title to his name. He holds all the major titles at bantamweight and is the current undisputed champion.




1. Dmitry Bivol

Title(s):

  • WBA Light Heavyweight World Champion

Dmitry Bivol fought twice in 2022 and won both his fights. He has been reigning as the WBA light heavyweight champion for quite a while now and made two defenses this year.

However, more impressive than his defenses, is who he defended his title against. Bivol defeated the #1 P4P fighter, Canelo Alvarez, and ended the year with an impressive win over Gilberto Ramírez. This makes him Fan Rankings Boxing Male Fighter of the Year of 2022.
