Top 10 College Basketball Centers 2023 Rankings

Ranking the best NCAA Centers of 2023 with names such as Zach Edey, Armando Bacot, and more

The countdown to March Madness is slowly starting to pick up as the NCAA Basketball tournament is just about a month away.

As the 2022-23 NCAA Basketball schedule regular season slowly comes to an end, the opportunity to look at the best players in the country including the best college basketball centers.

The centers landing on the Best Centers in College Basketball 2023 Rankings rank among some of the best players in all of college basketball while also ranking among some of the best potential NBA draft picks during the 2023 NBA Draft.

Headlining the list of the best centers in college basketball is the Purdue Boilermakers center Zach Edey who has helped the team sit ranked 1st among the NCAA Men’s College Basketball rankings at various times during the 2022-23 NCAA Basketball season.

Joining Edey on the list of the best centers in college basketball includes Oscar Tshiebwe of the Kentucky Wildcats, Armando Bacot of the North Carolina Tar Heels, and Hunter Dickinson of the Michigan Wolverines. Here is a look at the Top 10 NCAA Center 2023 Rankings.

Honorable Mention

Jack Nunge

School: Xavier Musketeers

Just missing the Top 10 NCAA Center 2023 Rankings list is the Xavier Musketeers senior center Jack Nunge. Nunge is as polished as any center among college basketball while ranking among the best centers over the course of the 2022-23 NCAA Basketball season.

The Musketeers big man is currently averaging 14.7 points per game to go along with 7.9 rebounds and two assists per contest. In addition, the Musketeers big man is solid on the defensive side of the floor while recording one blocked shot and one steal per contest.

PJ Hall

School: Clemson Tigers

Another top center to just miss the top 10 rankings list for the best centers in college basketball is PJ Hall of the Clemson Tigers.

Hall, who is in his third season with the Tigers has been solid all season for the team while improving his shooting performance as a whole.

Hall, who is averaging 14.4 points per game has improved his shooting from 49.3 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from behind the three-point line.

In addition to scoring Hall is averaging 5.3 rebounds per game to go along with one blocked shot and just under a steal per contests.

Top 10 College Centers

10. Branden Carlson

School: Utah Utes

In at number 10 on the Top 10 NCAA Center 2023 Rankings list is the Utah Utes big man Branden Carlson.

Carlson has been a key force for the team all season while helping the team pick up 17 wins over their first 26 contests while helping them sit in third place within the Pac-12 conference.

After posting career highs last year including his first season averaging double figure points, Carlson has rebounded in 2022-23 to post a career high 16.5 points per game to go along with career highs in rebounds (7.6), assists (1.5), and blocked shots per game (2.2).

9. Ryan Kalkbrenner

School: Creighton Bluejays

One of the most versatile centers in college basketball and one that should hear his name called during the 2023 NBA Draft is the Creighton Bluejays junior Ryan Kalkbrenner. Kalkbrenner who is from Florissant, Missouri, can do it all on the hardwood.

The Bluejays star has been solid all season, the defensive end of the floor averaging over two blocked shots per game (2.3) to go along with just under one steal (.7).

In addition, the Bluejays center is shooting 71 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from behind the three-point line while also averaging 15 points per game and 6.7 rebounds.

8. Adama Sanogo

School: UConn Huskies

As you start to look around the best centers in college basketball it is hard not to add Adama Sanogo from the UConn Huskies.

Sanogo who is in his third season of college basketball has great size and athletic ability to play the center position while having the talent to take the ball to the rim on any drive.

The Huskies center is currently averaging a career high 17.2 points per game to go along with 7.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and just below steal per contests.

7. Colin Castleton

School: Florida Gators

Despite the struggles of his entire Florida Gators team, Colin Castleton has done nearly everything in his power to help the team win night and night out.

The Gators senior who is from Deland, Florida can measure up against any center in college basketball while forcing opposing players to alter their play down low.

When you start to look for a great center, the player must play both ends of the floor while providing leadership. That is the case with Castleton who is leading the way averaging 16.5 points per game while also averaging three blocked shots per game.

In addition to the blocked shots, Castleton has added nearly one steal per game to go along with 7.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per contests.

6. Oumar Ballo

School: Arizona Wildcats 

One of the most impressive teams in all of college basketball over the course of the 2022-23 NCAA schedule has been the play of the Arizona Wildcats.

Wildcats are currently ranked second inside the Pac-12 with an 22-4 overall record while Oumar Ballo has been a key component of that success.

The seven-foot senior from Koulikoro, Mali is as aggressive as any center in college basketball while averaging nearly a steal per game (.8) to go along with 1.5 blocked shots.

On the offensive end of the floor, Ballo has averaged 14.7 points per game over the course of the 2022-23 basketball schedule to go along with 1.6 assists and 8.8 rebounds per contests.

5. Clifford Omoruyi

School: Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Rounding out the top five on the Top 10 NCAA Center 2023 Rankings list is Clifford Omoruyi. Omoruyi who is from Benin City, Nigeria has great size and athletic abilities while delivering a dynamic two-way player who can play on both ends of the floor.

His play on the court this season has the Rutgers Scarlet Knights a threat within the Big Ten conference including leading the team to an upset win over a Purdue Boilermakers team that was ranked 1st in the country.

Omoruyi is currently averaging just below a double double per game posting 13.5 points per game to go along with 9.8 rebounds per contests for the Scarlet Knights this season.

4. Hunter Dickinson

School: Michigan Wolverines

When you start looking at the top four centers on the Top 10 NCAA Center 2023 Rankings list each are well deserving of the top spot, and each are candidates to be a lottery draft pick during the 2023 NBA Draft.

Of the group Hunter Dickinson of the Michigan Wolverines landed at number four after another strong season this season while averaging just below 18 points per game (17.9) while also adding 8.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.7 blocked shots per game for the Wolverines this season.

3. Armando Bacot

School: North Carolina Tarheels

Looking at what makes a great center it all starts with their ability to attack the glass on both ends of the floor while also being great rim protectors, and aggressive finishers. That is the case with the North Carolina Tar Heels center Armando Bacot.

Bacot, who elected to return for another season this season is averaging a career high 17.6 points per game to go along with 11.3 rebounds, one blocked shot and 1.6 assists per game this season. Bacot has recorded 16 double doubles this season including one in each of the Tar Heels previous four contests. 

2. Oscar Tshiebwe

School: Kentucky Wildcats

Another NCAA basketball center that continues to dominate is the Kentucky Wildcats senior Oscar Tshiebwe. Tshiebwe who many expected to enter the 2022 NBA Draft elected to return for his senior season.

The Wildcats big man is currently leading the country while averaging 13.3 rebounds per contest. In addition, with his ability to rebound, Tshiebwe is averaging 16.6 points per game to go along with 1.1 assists, 1.1 blocked shots, and 1.1 steals per game for a solid Wildcats team.

1. Zach Edey

School: Purdue Boilermakers

In at number one on the Top 10 NCAA Center 2023 Rankings list is the Purdue Boilermakers Zach Edey. Edey, who is as good as any college basketball player in the nation, continues to dominate this season while helping the Boilermakers land at number one on the AP Top 25 Men’s Basketball rankings poll.

Edey, who some have projected to be a top five pick during the 2023 NBA Draft, is averaging a career high 22.2 points per game to go along with 13 rebounds per game and 2.3 blocked shots. Edey is currently ranked 5th in scoring in the nation while also ranking 2nd in rebound percentage.
