Who’s The Best Team in the MLB Right Now?

This major league season has so far been one of surprise and shock, and several teams that were once considered afterthoughts heading into this season have shown that they are true contenders. Now that the All-Star break has passed, the playoff race is heating up, and the gap between good teams and true World Series contenders is becoming much easier to identify. 

Building a championship-caliber roster requires more than a powerful lineup. The best team has a combination of reliable starting pitching, a dependable bullpen, strong defense, and enough depth to withstand injuries over a demanding 162-game season. Some organizations that we end up in the final months of the season have shown they have these attributes and are no longer focusing on whether they will make the playoffs, but whether they will make the World Series. But there is still a race developing for those final wild card spots.

Honorable Mention

San Diego Padres

The Padres remain one of the most talented but unpredictable teams in baseball. A few years ago, in an attempt to keep up with the rising Los Angeles Dodgers, who are in the same division, they made a series of trades to bolster their roster, including bringing in the young star Manny Machado. The team has also been focusing its efforts on the free-agent market, bringing in another young pitching star, Walker Buehler. However, these trades and signings have not skyrocketed the team as many had expected.

Currently, they are second in their division behind the behemoth that is the Los Angeles Dodgers and one game behind the final wild card position in the division. As a team, they have a .236 batting average, with 121 home runs. These are numbers that can keep their names in the headlines from time to time, but they still leave a lot on the table. There is a good chance they will make the playoffs in the wild card, but they will struggle to make it to the World Series.

Cleveland Guardians

The Guardians continue to thrive on fundamentals, pitching depth, and strong organizational development. While they may not have the same star power as some of the league’s elite teams, they consistently find ways to stay competitive in a tough American League landscape. Their pitching staff remains one of their biggest strengths. Despite their record being 57-57, they are sixth in the league in terms of ERA, which stands at 3.75. Where they fall short in small-ball baseball, they currently have a .231 batting average, which is good for 28th in the league, and 109, which is also 28th in the league.

So, this is a team that is being led by their pitching, which has helped them maintain the last wild card position in the American League. However, if they are not able to hit the ball and provide proper support to their pitching, it will be a struggle to make it to the World Series.

10. Texas Rangers

The Rangers remain one of the most dangerous teams in baseball when their lineup is clicking. Even with some inconsistency throughout the season, they have remained in the conversation thanks to a combination of veteran leadership and postseason experience. Players like Joc Pederson and Jake Burger have been in this league for a while and have been able to apply their experience and teach the young core, such as Ezequiel Duran and Wyatt Langford. 

Beyond their offensive upside, the Rangers have shown flashes of strong pitching performance that can carry them in short series. Nathan Eovaldi has been a staple in their rotation over the past couple of years. Still, MacKenzie Gore and Kumar Rocker are trying to show that when the 36-year-old Eovaldi or the 38-year-old Jacob deGrom decide to retire, they are capable of taking over the reins. For this season, they have certainly surprised people who did not expect much of them going into the season. At 56-58, they may not be breaking down any doors, but it is still good enough to be in the playoff race in the last few months of the year.

9. Arizona Diamondbacks

Arizona has been one of the quieter teams currently in the National League playoff picture. Thanks to an impressive offense bolstered by their young players, they have been able to take a step forward and raise their name among the best in the National League. Currently, they have a 60-54 record, which is good enough for the third wild card position and second in the NL West. They are currently 19th in the league with a .241, and most importantly, they are 28th in the league regarding strikeouts and 17th with 376 walks. What this proves is they do not waste at-bats; they do not strike out; they walk often; and they can do small ball. Maybe they are not hitting grand slams every inning, but they move a player from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and eventually home. 

This team is a sleeper team. They do not get a lot of attention, but they seem to enjoy that and revel in it. This team, despite being this low on the list, may turn a lot more heads if they can maintain their wild card position.

8. Chicago White Sox

The White Sox have spent much of the season at the top of the AL Central behind a productive lineup, which has transformed them into a legitimate postseason contender capable of challenging anyone in a short series. Players like Colson Montgomery, Munetaka Murakami, and Miguel Vargas are the young core of the team, pushing it into the playoffs with 25, 24, and 24 home runs, respectively. But their pitching is also something to marvel at, with players like Sean Burke and Davis Martin anchoring the top of the rotation. 

This team is young; all of the players mentioned previously are under 30, and yet they are helping their team lead the division and enter the playoffs. If this team is accomplishing so much and it’s only the beginning for so many of their star players, then this year may only be the beginning of what could be a dominant couple of years for the Chicago White Sox.

7. Philadelphia Phillies

When you think of the Phillies, your first thought may go to Bryce Harper, and yes, he is by far the star on the team, but he is not the only good player. One player does not help a team reach a 61-53 record; it’s a team effort. And when you look at the Phillies, this team is stacked from their lineup to their starting pitching to their bullpen. Not only do they have Harper, but they also have the home run-hitting machine in Kyle Schwarber, and Brandon Marsh is continuing to prove he is a valuable member of the squad. 

Now, let’s move to the pitching, where Christopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, and Zach Wheeler are shutting down every team they come across. It also helps knowing that when you are in a tight game and need someone to get the final three outs of the ninth inning, they have one of the best closers in the game with Jhoan Duran. 

This team got off to a slow start this year, which is why they are only seven and not higher, but if things continue to go the way they appear to go, this team is going to turn this league upside down come playoff season.

6. Chicago Cubs

The Cubs are a storied MLB team that even the most rookie baseball fan has heard of, but this year they are one of the most dangerous and well-rounded teams. Blending strong pitching with a steadily improving offense, this team has managed a 65-49 record, and if it wasn’t for them having the bad fortune of being in the same division as the Milwaukee Brewers, who have the best record in the league, they would be number one. 

When it comes to the players on the team, you have to mention Seiya Suzuki. Despite having a few injuries that have limited him to 97 games, he is still second on the team in home runs and RBIs. Then you have Dansby Swanson, who may not blow your mind with his bat, but whose defensive skills and experience on a championship-winning team are invaluable. The emergence of some young players has helped provide this otherwise experienced team with a little added juice. That balance has made them a legitimate threat in the National League playoff picture.

5. Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays continue to prove that organizational depth and player development can compete with baseball’s biggest payrolls. Tampa Bay has remained among the league leaders in wins thanks to disciplined hitting, outstanding pitching, and good coaching. Junior Caminero has emerged as one of baseball’s brightest young stars with 32 home runs and 70 RBIs. Brandon Lowe and Yandy Diaz continue to provide consistent production in the middle of the lineup. 

This team rarely beats itself. They excel at preventing runs through good pitching and creating scoring opportunities. Currently, they are second in the league with a team batting average of .259 and six stolen bases. So, not only can they keep the ball in play, but they can move players along to the next base in their quest to score. 

They currently lead the AL East and seem less concerned about making the playoffs and more concerned about winning the World Series.

4. New York Yankees

History has proven that you can never count out the New York Yankees. In fact, it would be shocking to head into the final months of the year and not talk about them. Despite the absence of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, this team has the depth to remain one of the best in the league. Players like Ben Rice, with his 31 home runs, and Jazz Chisholm Jr., with his 30 stolen bases, are helping keep this team solid in the first wild card spot and not too far off from division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. 

Pitching has also played a major role in the Yankees’ success. Cam Schlittler with his 2.26 ERA and Ryan Weathers are keeping the team in every game they are a part of, and then the bullpen does their job as well. Brent Headrick, with his 1.40 ERA, is what comes to most people’s minds, but do not forget players like Max Fried and Fernando Cruz, who do a similarly impressive job either keeping the opposing team from adding additional runs or keeping the lead when the starting pitcher has done their bit. If and when Aaron Judge or Stanton come back, they will just be added as another piece to an already well-established team. This team, of course, needs Aaron Judge, but their depth means that if he suffers an injury as he has now, they are still fully capable of being a competitive team.

3. Atlanta Braves

In 2025, the Atlanta Braves surprisingly struggled as they were unable to stay consistently healthy, but with the return of Ronald Acuna Jr., this team are back to their best in 2026 as they currently hold baseball’s best record at 20-9 through their first 29 games. In that time, the team are No. 1 in team ERA at 3.13, and given that they rank second in baseball in average and third in home runs, this is a team that can win in many different ways.

Through 29 games, the Braves have three players with 20 RBI or more and six with over 15, and given the depth in this lineup with the return of Acuna Jr., they’re the clear favorite in the National League East. On top of that, the Braves have three starters with over 32 innings pitched on the season, and if they can make a splash at the trade deadline, they may be the biggest threat to the Dodgers in the National League.

2. Milwaukee Brewers

Mentioned earlier on this page, the Brewers have a league-leading 70-43 record. They most certainly did not get here by luck. They got to this point by combining defense and smart roster construction through the years. Jake Bauers and Brice Turang have been doing the brunt of the work, not by slapping a home run every inning but by maintaining a solid batting average, keeping the ball in play, helping to score runs, and laying it all on the pitching staff. And what a pitching staff it is. Jacob Misiorowski is a possible Cy Young winner with his 1.63 ERA across 21 games. Then you have players like Kyle Harrison and Aaron Ashby who can lock down another team from the first inning. 

What makes this team good is their ability to score runs early and hold it. This team is not a back-and-forth team; once they get the lead, they keep it and dominate. They are not going to blow you away with grand slams, but they do all of the little things right. A lot of people talk about hitting because it’s flashy, but it’s pitching that ultimately determines a good team, and this team is full of aces.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

Despite the Brewers having a better record than the Dodgers, it would be hard for anyone to go against this team as the World Series favorites. Not only are they the defending champions, but they are the reigning two-time champions. This team has shown very few weaknesses in the last few years, and this year is no different. But it is important to point out that while Ohtani is the player everyone thinks about when they think of the Dodgers, he is not the only good player on this team. Max Muncy has 21 home runs, Andy Pages has 74 RBIs, and Freddie Freeman has a .310 batting average. Ohtani is the player everyone talks about, but this team’s entire lineup is full of players to be worried about. Opposing pitchers can never take a breath when they are dealing with this team because even if you strike out Ohtani, then Muncy comes and hits a home run, or Freddie gets a base hit. This team’s lineup is stacked from top to bottom, and as the years grind on, they seem to only be getting better. 

Let us not forget about their pitching staff because, yes, Ohtani is dominant on that side of the game too, but players like Yoshinobu and Justin Wrobleski are just as good if you are just focusing on pitching. Wrobleski has an 11-3 record with a 3.31 ERA, and Yoshinobu has an 11-7 record with a 2.76 ERA. These guys are dominant, and they are helping their team everytime they step on the field. 

But let us not forget Shohei Ohtani, who, yes, is not the only reason for the team’s success but is still a big part of it. His 8-2 record with a 1.79 ERA keeps him in the conversation for a CY young, and his .293 batting average and 24 home runs certainly keep him in the conversation for league MVP. This guy is a showstopper, and it’s hard to argue that if he were not on this team, they would not be as successful as they are.
