MLB Top 10 Best Center Fielders 2026 Rankings
Ranking the best center fielders of 2026 so far as Mike Trout, Andy Pages, Jackson Merrill, and more battle for the #1 spot
Who is the best Center Fielder in Baseball?
The 2026 Major League Baseball season is starting to heat up, and while the center field position is no longer full of the mega stars it once was, there’s still so much talent around the position.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t potential however, and with so many young stars vying for the position at the best player in CF in baseball, 2026 could be a fantastic season for the position. Ultimately, the CF position used to have superstars, but in 2026, it’s all about the potential, the growth of power and 5-tool players at the position, and as a result, this list is loaded with young stars ready to make their mark.
Here is a look at the Top 10 MLB Center Fielders 2026 Rankings
Honorable Mention
Evan Carter
Team: Texas Rangers
Evan Carter has flashed some solid potential over his first three seasons with the Texas Rangers, and after a career high of 5 home runs and 25 RBI in 63 games a year ago, he’s taking a huge leap thus far in 2026.
Across 119 at bats, Carter has 5 home runs and 13 RBI already, and with an OPS of .652, there’s no doubting that he’s on pace for a career high with the Rangers. Whether or not he ever becomes a star, only time will tell, but right now, he’s looking like he could blossom into one of the best center fielders in all of baseball.
Ceddanne Rafaela
Team: Boston Red Sox
Coming into 2026, many expected Ceddanne Rafaela to be one of the best center fielders in baseball, and while an OPS of .736 represents the highest number of his career, he’s still yet to hit his peak. At just 25-years of age, he’s got plenty of time to take that next step forward, but with the Red Sox struggling, it only undermines how solid he’s been.
Through 38 games played, he has hit 3 home runs and driven in 16 RBI, and after a career high of 16/63 a year ago, he’s certainly flashing the potential to be a five-tool player at center. One day, he’ll be very high on this list, but for now, Rafaela needs to find that consistent dominance before he can start taking those leaps into stardom.
Top 10 MLB Center Fielders 2026 Rankings
10. Garrett Mitchell
Team: Milwaukee Brewers
Given the amount of players at the big league level, there’s plenty that go underrated and overlooked, with 27-year old Garrett Mitchell of the Milwaukee Brewers being one of those. In four big league seasons, Mitchell has not played in more than 70 games, but early in 2026, it appears he’s putting it all together, playing in 35 of the teams 38 games thus far.
In that time, Mitchell has a career high of 22 RBI already, and while the .658 OPS doesn’t suggest a major power threat, if he keeps being consistent at the plate, he’ll remain on this list for years to come.
9. Jackson Merrill
Team: San Diego Padres
Like so many other star players, Jackson Merrill burst onto the scene at a very young age, with his 2024 campaign at the age of just 21 seeing him post an impressive 24 home runs and 90 RBI. While he took a step back a year ago, Merrill remains a very productive player out in center, with the DWAR of 0.3 showing how valuable he is on both sides of the ball.
At the plate, Merrill has 4 home runs and has driven in 18 runs early in the season, and while he may never be the power bat he showed in his rookie campaign, he’s a threat. With an OPS of .665, Merrill has struggled to replicate that production, but given his versatility, he could no doubt be much higher on this list come seasons end.
8. Julio Rodriguez
Team: Seattle Mariners
After breaking onto the scene back in 2022, many saw Seattle Mariners star Julio Rodriguez as one of the next big faces of Major League Baseball. While he hasn’t taken that true leap into superstardom, he’s been incredibly consistent over his four full seasons at the big league level, averaging 28 home runs and 85 RBI per season.
On top of that, he’s always been a plus defender for Seattle, and at 25-years of age, there’s no reason to believe he can’t be a great player for a long time to come. In 2026, J-Rod has 6 home runs and 18 RBI, but whether or not he reaches his career averages out in center, he’s solidified himself as the face of the Mariners and a star for years to come.
7. Trent Grisham
Team: New York Yankees
Average in todays baseball has become a very polarizing topic, and while it’s very important, there are so many things that can offset a poor average in 2026. That’s necessary for a player like Trent Grisham, who is hitting just .178 on the year, but with 5 home runs and a solid 23 RBI, the production is enough to justify his place on this list.
The DWAR of 0.0 means he’s about an average defender in center field, but given how he’s been able to produce in one of the most hitter friendly ballparks in the league, he deserves a place on this list.
6. Pete Crow-Armstrong
Team: Chicago Cubs
While the center field position in 2026 has seen an influx of power and production at the plate, but always, it has been a position of elite defensive play. That is embodied by Chicago Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong, who has established himself as easily the best defender at the position over the past few years.
In 2026, the DWAR once again leads baseball at a 1.3 mark, but at the plate he’s been solid as well, with 4 home runs and 17 RBI showing his talents at the plate as well. Ultimately, if the bat can come along in the coming years, PCA will be a genuine MVP candidate, and after 31 home runs and 95 RBI a year ago, he’s got the potential to be a great player at the MLB level for years to come.
5. Michael Harris II
Team: Atlanta Braves
As a whole, the Atlanta Braves have been arguably the best team in all of baseball this season, and at 25-years of age, Michael Harris II has established himself as a major reason why. After a career year in 2025, he’s backed it up with a red-hot start to this season, driving in 23 runs with 8 home runs in his first 38 games of the campaign.
Defensively, Harris is among the elite center fielders in the game, with a DWAR of 0.6 putting him around the top of the list, and this combined with all of the other tools, there’s no doubting he’ll be a top player at the position for a long, long time to come.
4. Oneil Cruz
Team: Pittsburgh Pirates
Most of the players on this list flash not only a great bat at the plate, but great defense, and unfortunately, Oneil Cruz of the Pittsburgh Pirates is not one of those. With a DWAR of -0.5, the former middle infielder turned center fielder is struggling mightily to adjust to the position full-time.
At the plate however, it’s a completely different story, as he has hit 10 home runs in just 165 plate appearances, already half way to his career high of 20, with 29 runs driven in during that time as well. At some point, the defense needs to catch up to the production at the plate, but given the potential at just 27-years of age, that’s likely to happen in the coming years.
3. Byron Buxton
Team: Minnesota Twins
Once upon a time, Byron Buxton was one of the most promising prospects in all of baseball, and while he struggled to put it together consistently, that has changed in recent years. After a career year at the plate in 2025, Buxton looks just as good, if not better in 2026, with 13 home runs and 21 RBI early in the season showing that the power is clearly here to stay.
With an OPS of .868, Buxton is finally fulfilling his potential, and given that he’s also got a DWAR of 0.1, it shows that he’s still a very, very good defender in center. The overall talent in Minnesota is somewhat lacking, but one thing that can’t be denied is the talent of their leadoff hitter, who is finally hitting his prime at the age of 32.
2. Mike Trout
Team: Los Angeles Angels
For over a decade, Mike Trout was undeniably the No. 1 center fielder in all of baseball, and while injuries have held him back in recent times, in 2026, he’s turned back the clock. At 34-years of age, Trout is once again dominating at the plate, slashing .248/.414/.518, and while he’s been DH’ing a lot, he’s still a very solid player in the field.
On top of those numbers, the consistent power has returned, with 11 home runs and 23 RBI through his first 40 games played, and after a stellar career, it’s great to see Trout back to 100%, even if he remains on a mostly struggling Angels team.
1. Andy Pages
Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
Over the past few seasons, Andy Pages has gone from a utility role player for the back-to-back World Series Champions to the full-time starter in center field. In that time, he’s taken his game to heights that nobody would have expected, as he currently leads MLB at the CF position in OPS with an impressive .946 mark.
On top of that, he’s among the MLB leaders in RBI with 35 while also blasting 9 home runs, and with a DWAR of 0.9 that ranks second at the position, there’s no denying how good he’s been thus far in 2026. Whether or not he keeps this up over a full 162 games, only time will tell, but if he does, Pages may be receiving genuine MVP votes at seasons end.
