Major League Baseball Teams 2023 Rankings End of Season

The 2023 Major League Baseball season delivered an action pack schedule of games from the first pitches on opening day to the final plays of the 2023 World Series. A season that delivered three different 100 win teams including the Baltimore Orioles who jumped from one of the bottom teams in the American League to the best record within the league just a few seasons after posting multiple 100 loss seasons. In addition, as the season wrapped up late season hot streaks produced a memorable run for the Texas Rangers that landed them atop the Top 10 MLB Teams 2023 Rankings End of Season list.

The Rangers who finished the season winning six of their final 10 games to secure one of the final wild card spots used that late success to run through the post season in route to winning the World Series.

As the Rangers finished as World Series Champions, a few of the other top teams to join them among the best teams in baseball during the 2023 MLB season included the Orioles, the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers who each won at least 100 games.

The fifth team to slot in among the best includes the Arizona Diamondbacks who also used a late season surge to reach the World Series. Here is a look at the Top 10 MLB Teams 2023 Rankings End of Season list:

Honorable Mention

Seattle Mariners

Record: 88-74, 3rd AL West

Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention

Just missing the Top 10 MLB Teams 2023 Rankings End of Season list is the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners who just missed the MLB Playoffs after winning 88 games during the season had an up and down season that featured two eight game winning streaks during the second half of the season.

However, their inconsistencies and struggles both at the plate and on the mound also led to the team posting four losing streaks of at least three games during the final month of the regular season. Overall, the Mariners finished the season ranked 12th in runs scored (758) and 3rd in team earned run average (3.74).

New York Yankees

Record: 82-80, 4th AL East

Previous Ranking: Unranked

When you look at the success around the game of baseball it is hard to look past the New York Yankees despite finishing 4th within the AL East. Overall, the AL East was the best division in all of baseball with four teams posting a winning record while each team required playing each team within the division 13 times.

The Yankees offense finished the season 9th in home runs with 219 during the season while the teams pitching led by AL Cy Young Award Winner Gerrit Cole pitched to a 3.97 team earned run average.

In addition to having the best pitcher in baseball the Yankees lineup featured four players to top the 21 home run mark including Aaron Judge who finished the season with 37 home runs despite playing in just 106 total games.

Top 10 MLB Teams

10. Toronto Blue Jays

Record: 89-73

Previous Ranking: 8

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 Baseball Teams 2023 Rankings End of Season list is the Toronto Blue Jays who were one of the tour teams within the AL East to post a winning record during the 2023 MLB season.

The Blue Jays relied on their strong pitching to ride along and into the American League Playoffs as a wild card team. Over the season the Blue Jays finished with the 4th best team earned run average in baseball at 3.78 over 1451.2 innings of work.

In addition, the Blue Jays pitching staff posted the second most strikeouts (1,528), 10th lowest WHIP (1.25) and 10th lowest batting average against (2.41) in baseball. However, the team’s lack of consistency at the plate yielded just 746 total runs and 188 home runs.

9. Minnesota Twins

Record: 87-75, 1st AL Central

Previous Ranking: 9

Entering the 2023 MLB season the AL Central was a wide open division with many MLB experts suggesting the division would be a two way battle between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians.

However, the Minnesota Twins emerged as the bet team in the division posting an 87-75 record during the regular season including winning seven of their final 10 games of the season to lock up the division.

Overall, the Twins were as solid as any team in baseball both at the plate as well as on the mound. As a team the Twins finished 10th in all of baseball in runs scored (778) while their pitching allowed 6th lowest earned run average (3.87) during the season.

That success continued into the playoffs as the Twins swept the Toronto Blue Jays in two games allowing just one earned run over two outings before having their season ended by the Houston Astros in the division series round of the MLB playoffs.

8. Milwaukee Brewers

Record: 92-70, 1st NL Central

Previous Ranking: 6

With baseball the only thing that can slow down a great hitting team is a great pitching team and that is exactly what the Milwaukee Brewers were during the 2023 MLB season.

The Brewers finished the season with the best earned run (3.71) in all of baseball while also allowing the lowest opposing batting average (.226) over the course of the 162 regular season schedule. Corbin Burnes led the way on the mound going 10-8 on the season while pitching to a 3.39 earned run average.

In addition to strong starting pitching the Brewers bullpen ranked among the best in baseball posting a 3.40 earned run average over 565.2 innings of work. Despite the regular season success, the Brewers struggles scoring including just 728 runs showed up in the postseason leading to their collapse to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

7. Houston Astros

Record: 90-72, 1st AL West

Previous Ranking: 10

Over the past four to five seasons the Houston Astros have been one of the best teams in all of baseball and that can be said for the 2023 MLB season. They used a late surge winning five of their final six games of the regular season including sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks to secure the AL West.

The Astros could do it all, posting the 5th most runs scored (827) and the 5th best batting average (.259) in all of baseball. The Astros lineup featured 11 plays with at least 10 home runs and five players with at least 70 runs batted in.

Meanwhile the Astros pitching staff finished the season with a 3.94 earned run average mark to go along with the seventh most strikeouts (1,460). In addition, the Astros ranked among the best road teams in baseball finishing with a 51-30 road record.

6. Tampa Bay Rays

Record: 99-63, 2nd AL East

Previous Ranking: 4

Another AL East team hampered by playing in the best division in baseball was the Tampa Bay Rays who finished the regular season just missing the 100 win mark at 99-63 on the year. The Rays finished the 2023 MLB season with the 3rd highest run differential mark in the league at +195 over the teams 162 regular season games.

Like many of the great teams in baseball the Rays were dynamic both on the mound as well as at the plate. Despite featuring no top tier elite hitter, the Rays posted a .260 batting average during the regular season to go along with 860 runs scored, 230 home runs and 282 doubles.

In addition, the Rays were excellent on the base paths stealing 160 bases and finishing 4th in all of baseball. Meanwhile the Rays pitching posted the 5th best earned run average (3.86) and a league leading 1.18 WHIP mark.

5. Los Angeles Dodgers

Record: 100-62, 1st NL West

Previous Ranking: 3

Rounding out the Top 5 best Baseball teams landing in the Top 10 MLB Teams 2023 Rankings End of Season list is the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers are one of three teams to finish the regular season with at least 100 wins.

When it comes to success the Dodgers used their All-Star lineup of hitters to produce the second most runs (906) and home runs (877) in baseball. A lineup that featured five different players hitting at least 23 home runs including three players hitting at least 33 home runs.

However, the team’s hot regular season failed to roll over to the postseason while the opening round bye for posting one of the best records led to the team being swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks within the divisional series while producing just six runs.

4. Arizona Diamondbacks

Record: 84-78, NL Champions

Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention

As you see in all team sports a team that gets hot during the late season often rolls that success over the postseason. That is the case with the Arizona Diamondbacks who finished the regular season in second place within the NL West while trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers by 16 games within the division.

Despite being one of the younger teams in baseball the Diamondbacks posted 84 wins during the regular season while posting fewer runs scored than runs allowed. Headlining the success of the young Diamondbacks was NL Rookie of the Year Corbin Carroll who finished the season with a team leading .285 batting average to go along with 54 stolen bases, 25 home runs, 116 runs scored and 76 runs batted in.

The Diamondbacks would go on to sweep both the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers within the NL Postseason before knocking off the Philadelphia Phillies in seven before their success ran out against the Texas Rangers in the World Series.

3. Baltimore Orioles

Record: 101-61, 1st AL East

Previous Ranking: 2

The Baltimore Orioles were possibly the best story in baseball last season while posting a second straight winning season while topping the 100 win mark for the first team since the 1980 and 1979 MLB seasons.

This success was just three seasons removed from the team’s 110 loss season during the 2023 season while also posting 100 loss seasons during the 2018 and 2019 MLB seasons.

The Orioles were loaded with talented players both at the plate and on the mound led by AL Rookie of the Year Gunnar Henderson while anchoring down one of the best back ends of the bullpens in all of baseball in Yennier Cano and Felix Bautista.

Despite their regular season success, the post season byes to start the playoffs slowed down the Orioles success in route to the team being swept by the Texas Rangers within the Division Series of the postseason.

2. Atlanta Braves

Record: 104-58, 1st NL East

Previous Ranking: 1

While the rotation was not as successful, the overall pitching staff finished the season with 15 shutouts while pitching to a 4.14 team earned run average. The Braves hot regular season slowed down facing off against a red hot Philadelphia Phillies team within the postseason.
