The quarterback position is possibly the most important position in the entire National Football League year in and year out. The same was said for last season as two of the best quarterbacks in the league in Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts played at an exceptionally high level.

As you start to look at the quarterback position around the NFL many great quarterbacks suit up around the NFL each week while deserving of a mention among the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks 2023 rankings list.

A list that includes Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts as two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL entering the upcoming 2023 NFL schedule.

Mahomes lands at number one on the list of the top quarterbacks in the NFL after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a second NFL Super Bowl title.

Just behind Mahomes on the list of quarterbacks is the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts who played at a career level last season while leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl. 

Joining Hurts and Mahomes among the best of the best at the quarterback position include Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, Justin Herbert of the San Diego Chargers and Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills. Here is a look at the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks 2023 rankings list.

Derek Carr

Team: New Orleans Saints

2022 Stats: 3,522 YDS, 24 TD, 14 INT, 55.5 QBR

Landing just outside of the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks 2023 rankings list is the new starting quarterback of the New Orleans Saints Derek Carr.

The 2022 NFL season was an interesting one for the long time Las Vegas Raiders starting quarterback who was ultimately replaced at the position.

That said despite being replaced, Carr finished the season ranked 14th in the NFL in yards with 3,522 yards over just 15 games played.

Meanwhile Carr threw for 24 touchdowns while completing 60.8 percent of his passes and posting a 68.8 Quarterback Rating. Carr continues to showcase his ability to make plays while putting up a strong stat line. Look for that to continue in his first season with the Saints in 2023.

Jared Goff

Team: Detroit Lions

2022 Stats: 4,438 YDS, 29 TD, 7 INT, 61.1 QBR

The Detroit Lions took a big stride forward during the 2022 NFL schedule narrowly missing a playoff spot in the NFC. Some of that success comes on the arm of Jared Goff who put together a big season while topping the 4,000-yard passing mark for the third time in his career.

Goff finished the season passing for 4,438 total yards to go along with 29 passing touchdowns to just seven interceptions. The Lions quarterback showed patience all season while avoiding costly turnovers while also completing 65.1 percent of his passes.

10. Geno Smith

Team: Seattle Seahawks

2022 Stats: 4,282 YDS, 30 TD, 11 INT, 60.8 QBR

Rewind to before the 2022 NFL season and it would be hard to imagine Geno Smith ranking near the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Now however, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback lands at number 10 on the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks 2023 rankings list.

Smith’s strong play earned him a new three-year deal worth $75 million dollars. Smith finished last season with the highest completion percentage in the NFL after completing 69.8 percent of his passes.

In addition to the completion percent, Smith ranked 8th in passing yards with 4,282 to go along with the 4th most passing touchdowns (30) in the NFL.

9. Trevor Lawrence

Team: Jacksonville Jaguars

2022 Stats: 4,113 YDS, 25 TD, 8 INT, 54.5 QBR

Coming out of Clemson and being selected number one overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2021 NFL Draft, high expectations were set on the shoulders of Trevor Lawrence. 

After a difficult rookie season, Lawrence took a huge stride forward in his sophomore season making plays while finishing with a career high 4,113 yards passing to go along with 25 touchdowns.

In addition to making plays with his arm all season long, the Jaguars quarterback also rushed for 291 yards to go along with five rushing touchdowns.

The big step forward for Lawrence opened up the door for the Jaguars to not only make the playoffs but pick up a win during Wild Card weekend.

8. Kirk Cousins

Team: Minnesota Vikings

2022 Stats: 4,547 YDS, 29 TD, 14 INT, 49.9 QBR

One quarterback that continues to get overlooked year in and year out around the NFL is Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings. While many critics point to the fact he has Justin Jefferson for his success, while avoiding the fact other great quarterbacks have top tier wide receivers. 

Nonetheless Cousins continues to play at a high level each season including last season for the Vikings. Cousins topped the 4,000-yard mark for the seventh time of his career last year and for the third straight season for the Vikings.

The Vikings quarterback finished 2022 throwing for 4,547 yards to go along with 29 touchdown passes and a 65.9 percent completion mark.

7. Aaron Rodgers

Team: New York Jets

2022 Stats: 3,695 YDS, 26 TD, 12 INT, 39.3 QBR

The veteran signal caller has landed a new home after multiple off-seasons of drama surrounding the long-time quarterback over the past few seasons in Green Bay.

Despite failing to reach the NFL playoffs last season Rodgers played at a high level while dealing with a long list of concerns from the wide receiver position including not having an ideal number one receiver after the team traded Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders.

In the end Rodgers still managed to throw for 3,695 yards to go along with 26 touchdowns. As Rodgers moves to New York, the receiving corps features one of the up-and-coming receivers in the NFL in Garrett Wilson. 

6. Lamar Jackson

Team: Baltimore Ravens

2022 Stats: 2,242 YDS, 17 TD, 7 INT, 59.1 QBR

One thing is for certain and that is when Lamar Jackson is healthy and on the football field the Baltimore Ravens win football games. That success landed Jackson the largest NFL contract in the history of the game while securing him as the team’s starting quarterback for the next five seasons.

With Jackson on the field for an entire game, the Ravens posted a 7-4 record last season while posting a 25-12 record over the past three NFL seasons.

Jackson continues to be a menace for opposing teams to slow down while racking up 2,242 yards passing last season with 17 touchdowns while also adding 764 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns in just 12 total games.

5. Justin Herbert

Team: San Diego Chargers

2022 Stats: 4,739 YDS, 25 TD, 10 INT, 58.2 QBR

Rounding out the top five on the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks 2023 rankings list is the San Diego Chargers franchise quarterback Justin Herbert.

Since arriving during the 2020 NFL season after being drafted by the Chargers during the 2020 NFL Draft, Herbert has ranked among the NFL leaders in passing yards and passing touchdowns. 

This includes during the 2022 NFL season after topping the 4,000-yard passing mark for the third straight season while also throwing for 25 touchdowns.

Herbert has a strong receiving crew as well as versatile running back to help him continue to have success during the 2023 NFL season.

4. Josh Allen

Team: Buffalo Bills

2022 Stats: 4,283 YDS, 35 TD, 14 INT, 71.4 QBR

When it comes to the top four quarterbacks in the NFL it could be easier to just lump each one in at number one and call it a tie. While each is well deserving of that only one could take home the top spot while the other three round out the top four quarterbacks in the NFL.

Allen slides in at number four after leading the Buffalo Bills to another playoff appearance while also competing as one of the best teams in the NFL.

The Bills quarterback plays the game to win while using both his arm and legs to keep the Bills alive. Last season Allen threw for 4,283 yards while rushing for 762 rushing yards while combining for 42 touchdowns Allen enters the 2023 NFL season with a loaded receiving corps including Stefon Diggs while having their sights on a Super Bowl trophy.

3. Joe Burrow

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

2022 Stats: 4,475 YDS, 35 TD, 12 INT, 58.7 QBR

It is hard to not like what all NFL fans have seen from Joe Burrow since arriving in the NFL after leading the LSU Tigers to the National Football Championship.

Burrow, who has one of the top receiving corps in the NFL finished 5th in the NFL in passing yards with 4,475 yards while also finishing tied for 2nd in the NFL with 35 passing touchdowns. 

In addition to the yards Burrow is extremely accurate completing 68.3 percent of his passes while turning in a quarterback rating of 100.8 for the season.

2. Jalen Hurts

Team: Philadelphia Eagles

2022 Stats: 3,701 YDS, 22 TD, 6 INT, 66.4 QBR

Game changers come in all sizes with Jalen Hurts being one of the top game changers in the NFL despite not being asked to do it all with his arm.

Hurts used the 2022 NFL season to mature while working on his complete game including from a passing angle. Hurts finished the season setting career highs in passing yards (3,701), passing touchdowns (22), completion percentage (66.5%) while also adding a career high 13 rushing touchdowns.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback development and maturity on the field helped guide the Eagles to a near win during the Super Bowl.

1. Patrick Mahomes

Team: Kansas City Chiefs

2022 Stats: 5,250 YDS, 41 TD, 12 INT, 77.6 QBR

In at number one on the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks 2023 rankings list is the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes is the clear-cut favorite entering the 2023 NFL season to be the top player at the position.

The Chiefs quarterbacks play on the field helped guide the team to their second Super Bowl trophy with Mahomes under center. During the regular season Mahomes was unstoppable while throwing for a league high 5,250 yards and 41 touchdown passes.

The 5,250 yards was the second time in Mahomes career he topped 5,000 yards passing and second time passing for at least 40 touchdown passes.
