Ranking the best Hispanic Football Players in the world of 2022 in Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month

One sport that is built and driven by the United States is American Football including both College Football and the National Football League.

As the NFL continues to dominate in the rankings of the top sports in the United States, the league has put a focus on expanding the game to other countries. These other locations have included London as well as playing games in Mexico City located in Mexico.

As the league attempts to bring diversity to the NFL and the on-going celebration of Hispanic Heritage month that just started, it gives us a chance to look at the Top NFL Latino Players 2022 rankings.

Before you get a chance to see those Top 10 NFL Players, as of 2017 only two percent of all the NFL players were Latino.

Nonetheless despite the small quantity of NFL Hispanic players, the league has seen some great Latino football players over the years.

The group includes the likes of Hall of Famers Anthony Munoz and Tony Gonzalez who both rank among the best players to play their position.

In addition, the NFL has some promising Latino talent in the NFL currently with 2022 NFL first round draft pick Chris Olave of the New Orleans Saints leading the way. Here is a look at the Top 10 NFL Latino Players 2022 rankings.

Honorable Mention

Alfredo Gutierrez

Team: San Francisco 49ers

Landing just outside of the Top 10 NFL Latino Players 2022 rankings is the San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Alfredo Gutierrez.

Gutierrez, who was born in Tijuana, Mexico played his high school football in Montgomery High School in San Diego.

After playing high school football Alfredo Gutierrez went to Monterrey Institute of Technology to play football while being a key part of the teams National Championship.

Currently Gutierrez is a part of the 49ers practice squad after joining the team on May 4th, 2021, through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program (IPPP). 

Isaac Alarcon

Team: Dallas Cowboys

Another NFL Latino player that made his path to the NFL and with the Dallas Cowboys franchise is Isaac Alarcon.

Alarcon who joined the Cowboys in 2020 in part with the NFL’s IPPP program is currently signed to a reserve/future contract with the Cowboys and part of the team’s practice squad.

The Cowboys offensive tackle has the ability to play both left and right tackle. Prior to making his way to the NFL, the Monterrey, Nuevo Leon native played his high school football at UANL High School and also college football at Monterrey Institute of Technology.

Top 10 NFL Latino Players

10. Chris Steele

Team: Miami Dolphins

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 NFL Latino Players 2022 rankings list is Chris Steele. Another 2022 NFL rookie making a name for himself among the Top NFL Latino players is Steele who joined the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent.

Steele, who started 23 games with the USC Trojans over the previous three seasons, was a solid defensive back who showed promise as a tough physical shutdown cornerback.

Steel who is just over six foot tall has solid size and speed to play the position. As he slowly plays himself into an NFL player, Steele racked up three interceptions, 62 tackles and one sack over his college career.

9. Josh Rivas

Team: New York Giants

Like a few of the other young Latino rookies entering the NFL in 2022, Josh Rivas is looking to make a name for himself while developing into a potential NFL guard/offensive lineman.

Rivas, who played his college football at Kansas State, put together a solid college football career while demonstrating his ability to play football at a high level.

Despite his success on the field, Rivas failed to get drafted before signing with the New York Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent.

8. Tariq Castro-Fields

Team: Washington Commanders

The former Penn State Nittany Lions defensive back was once a highly coveted four-star recruit out of Riverdale Baptist located within Upper Marlboro in Maryland.

After electing to head to Penn State, Tariq Castro-Fields put together a solid career during his five years with the Nittany Lions racking up 94 tackles, one sack, and three interceptions. 

Castro-Fields who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 6th round of the 2022 NFL draft and is now with the Washington Commanders after being claimed before the start of the 2022 NFL season.

7. Malcolm Rodriguez

Team: Detroit Lions

The future looks promising for Latino football after a strong class of rookies enter the NFL during the 2022 NFL season.

One of those Latino NFL players is the Detroit Lions linebacker Malcom Rodriguez who was selected by the Detroit Lions during the 6th round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Rodriguez made his NFL debut during the teams 2022 NFL Schedule week 1 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Rodriguez, who was a First-Team All-Big 12 selection during the 2021 college football season racked up 408 career tackles to go along with 7.5 sacks. In his NFL debut Rodriguez racked up four tackles including one tackle for a loss.

6. Isiah Pacheco

Team: Kansas City Chiefs

If you are looking for an explosive big play type of football player, the former Rutgers star and current Kansas City Chiefs running back is that player.

Over his career with Rutgers, Isiah Pacheo racked up 2,442 yards to go along with 18 rushing touchdowns. His speed and skills at the position landed him to the Chiefs during the 7th round of the 2022 NFL draft.

In his NFL debut during week 1 of the 2022 NFL schedule, Pacheo carried the ball 12 times while racking up 62 yards and a rushing touchdown.

5. Rigoberto Sanchez

Team: Indianapolis Colts

Coming in at number 9 on the Top 10 NFL Latino Players 2022 rankings list is the Indianapolis Colts punter Rigoberto Sanchez.

Sanchez, who joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2017, has been the team’s primary punter since the 2017 NFL Season.

As a rookie Sanchez posted 84 total punts for 3764 yards while averaging nearly 45 yards per punt earning a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association (PFWA) All-Rookie team.

Over his career Sanchez has also handled the team’s kickoff duties while posting a 60 percent touchback percentage.

4. Matt Corral

Team: Carolina Panthers

A second member of the 2022 NFL Draft class that is raising the bar for Latino NFL players is the former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral.

Corral, who racked up 8,281 passing yards and 57 touchdowns at Ole Miss, was selected by the Carolina Panthers with the team’s 3rd round pick.

Despite the hype, another season will have to wait for Corral to showcase his talents after suffering a Lisfranc injury that will shut him down for the entire 2022 NFL season. Corral has the potential to be a starting quarterback in the NFL moving into the future.

3. Zane Gonzalez

Team: Carolina Panthers 

After putting together a solid college football kicking career with the Arizona State Sun Devils, Gonzalez took home multiple awards including being a Unanimous All-American in 2016 as well as the Lou Groza Award.

His performance landed him with the Cleveland Browns during the 7th round of the 2017 NFL draft. Since then, Gonzalez has bounced around spending time with the Browns, Arizona Cardinals, and Carolina Panthers. Over his six-year NFL career, Gonzalez has made 80.5 percent of his kicks including 91 total field goals.

2. Blake Martinez

Team: Baltimore Ravens

The current Baltimore Ravens veteran linebacker has spent the previous six seasons in the NFL between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants.

After being selected during the 4th round of the 2016 NFL draft, Martinez spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Packers.

Over his first four seasons with the Packers, he recorded at least 140 tackles in three of the four seasons including finishing tied for the NFL with 144 tackles during the 2017 NFL season. 

Martinez, who recently signed with the Detroit Lions has recorded 686 career tackles to go along with four interceptions, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. 

1. Chris Olave

Team: New Orleans Saints

Landing at the top of the Top 10 NFL Latino Players 2022 rankings is the New Orleans Saints first round draft pick during the 2022 NFL Draft.

Olave who spent his college career with the Ohio State Buckeyes raked up two First-Team All-Big Ten honors over the past two seasons leading to him being selected with the 11th overall pick.

During his college career, Olave racked up 176 career catches to go along with 2,711 receiving yards and 36 touchdown catches.

Now Olave brings his playmaking abilities to the NFL as a big-time threat with the Saints. In his NFL debut, Olave hauled in three catches for 41 yards.
