Top 10 MLB Best Black Baseball Players 2026 Rankings
Ranking MLB's best current black baseball players in honor of Black History Month as Mookie Betts, Aaron Judge, and more battle for #1
The Best Current Black Baseball MLB Players for Black History Month
Even before their admission into Major League Baseball in 1947, when Jackie Robinson broke the barrier as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers, African-American baseball players had a huge impact on the sport. Dating back to the Negro Leagues, players like Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, and many others brought a standard of excellence that continues today.
Robinson’s entrance opened the door for many talented, hard-working African-American players to display their talents in the integrated Major Leagues where top-shelf performers like Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Bob Gibson, Reggie Jackson, and many others were among the best in the sport. By the 1970’s, African-Americans represented about 17 percent of all major leaguers, and the trend would continue until the end of the 20th century, when the numbers began to plummet. Despite a slow climb in recent years, African-Americans now make up less than seven percent of all major leaguers.
At the start of the 2026 campaign, there were 52 African-American players on MLB rosters, an average of about two per squad. In recognizing a Top Ten, that number represents roughly 19 percent of the total. While developmental programs like the DREAM Series have been instrumental in rejuvenating an interest in baseball among African-American youth, there is still much work to be done. The players listed below (and many more who aren’t) provide inspiration for young MLB hopefuls going forward.
The 2026 Major League Baseball (MLB) season is slowly approaching as spring training gets underway, the sport continues to be graced by some of the most talented and influential black players in the history of the game. From power hitters to elite pitchers and versatile athletes, these players have not only shaped the current landscape of the league but also carry the legacy of trailblazers who broke barriers for African American players in the sport. Among the top of the Top 10 Best Black Baseball Players 2026 rankings list is the New York Yankees Aaron Judge and the Los Angeles Dodgers Mookie Betts.
In this era, players like Betts of the Dodgers and of the Yankees have consistently remained among the best in the league. The two have combined to win three AL MVP Awards and have been named to a combined 14 MLB All-Star teams.
Joining them among the list of talented black baseball players in Major League Baseball are the next wave of talented stars such as Masyn Winn of the St. Louis Cardinals, Hunter Greene of the Cincinnati Reds, and Michael Harris II of the Atlanta Braves.
Their skill, leadership, and impact extend far beyond the diamond, making them not only stars in the 2025 MLB season but also role models for the next generation. Let’s take a closer look at the best black baseball players who are leading the charge in Major League Baseball this season.
Here is a look at the Top 10 MLB Best Black Players 2026 Rankings:
Honorable Mention
CJ Abrams
Team: Washington Nationals
Position: SHORTSTOP
Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams is one of baseball’s emerging power/speed threats, already flashing 30 homers/30 steals potential at age 25. In 2022, Abrams was already a National League All-Star at age 22, when he finished the season with 18 home runs and 47 stolen bases.
In 2026, Abrams is already second on the team in home runs with nine in this first 42 games, and is hovering around a .300 batting average. Abrams will eventually climb in the rankings, but he’ll need to improve the occasional lack of plate discipline that results in prolonged batting slumps, and he’ll have to improve defensively at shortstop if that’s where he remains long-term.
Devin Williams
Team: New York Mets
Position: RELIEF PITCHER
Devin Williams spent the first six years of his Major League Baseball career as a “lights-out” middle reliever and closer, including two All-Star game appearances and the 2020 National league Rookie of the Year award. Then in 2024, he gave up a late-inning, game and series-losing home run to the New York Mets’ Peter Alonso which appeared to have shattered his confidence. The last place you want to walk into with shattered confidence is Yankee Stadium while pitching for the home team, which is exactly what Williams did the following season as a free agent signee.
To his credit, Williams fought and was actually effective towards the latter stages of the 2025 season, his only one with the Yankees. After the abuse he took in the Bronx, it was a bit surprising to see him end up signing with the Mets as their closer, a role he’d eventually lose early in the 2026 season. But Williams was too good for too long to give up on now, especially knowing of the volatility of the relievers across the league. He’ll be back, but he’ll likely have to do it outside of New York City.
As Hayes looks to continue to establish himself as an everyday role player for the Pirates, his presence among Major League Baseball black baseball players is crucial to helping to develop the game for the community across the country.
Offensively, Hayes has shown flashes of potential, with the ability to hit for average and get on base, but he’s looking to take his all-around game to the next level during the upcoming 2025 MLB season.
Top 10 Black MLB Players in 2026
10. Cedric Mullins
Team: Tampa Bay Rays
Position: OUTFIELDER
The 31-year-old Cedric Mullins has fallen on rough times lately, but it wasn’t long ago that he was recognized as one of the more complete players in baseball. A former 30-30 player and American League All-Star in 2021, Mullins spent several years as a power/speed threat as well as a defensive wizard in the outfield, primarily with the Baltimore Orioles.
Mullins has struggled with the bat the last couple of years and was a disappointment as a mid-season acquisition for the New York Mets, but his current team, the Tampa Bay Rays, are hopeful he’ll regain his stroke to the point where he can be a major contributor as they compete for the American League East title.
9. Hunter Greene
Team: Cincinnati Reds
Position: STARTING PITCHER
The Cincinnati Reds are hoping Hunter Greene is a major part of the answer to their pitching woes of the recent past. The 26-year-old Los Angeles native and 2024 National league All-Star brings an impressive strikeout to innings ratio to the mound every few days, and as always a threat to run a 100 miles-per-hour fastball past a batter while displaying better-than-average control.
Greene has missed the early stages of the 2026 season after arthroscopic surgery on his elbow, but the Reds hope to have him back by early summer to reinforce their starting pitching rotation and to make a playoff run in the competitive National League Central Division.
8. Michael Harris
Team: Atlanta Braves
Position: CENTER FIELDER
Now in his fifth season and an outfield fixture with the Atlanta Braves, the 25-year-old Michael Harris has shown consistent 20 home run, 20 stolen bases capability. The 2022 National League Rookie of the Year walked into the centerfield position with the major league squad, has never looked back, and is now recognized as one of the better centerfielders in baseball.
In addition to his power potential and base-stealing capabilities, Harris also displays tremendous range in the middle of the Braves’ outfield. Harris is one of the primary reasons for the Atlanta Braves’ blazing-hot start for the 2026 season, and an improved on-base percentage would make him even more of a threat going forward. The Braves are hoping he can remain healthy as well.
7. Josh Bell
Team: Minnesota Twins
Position: FIRST BASEMAN
Power-hitting first baseman Josh Bell of the Minnesota Twins (as of this writing, at least) has played for eight MLB teams in the last six seasons. The bad news is he’s always on the move; the good news is there’s always a team that wants him. Bell is good enough to have once hit 37 home runs in a season as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and was a member of the 2019 National league All-Star team.
Now officially a journeyman (and how many of us would like to be an MLB journeyman?), the 33-year-old Bell looks forward to several more years as a veteran first baseman who can help a team looking for power and steady play at the position.
6. James Wood
Team: Washington Nationals
Position: OUTFIELDER
James Wood of the Washington Nationals is just getting started. Just 23 years old and already an intimidating presence in the batter’s box, the 6’6″ Wood is well on his way to becoming one of the league’s most dangerous power hitters. In 2025, his first full MLB season, Wood connected for 31 home runs, and early in the 2026 season, he’s already on pace to exceed 40 home runs.
The Nationals are hoping to help Wood cut down on his league-leading 221 strikeouts in 2025 as they are now using him in the leadoff spot. Wood is also a threat to steal a base, but we’ll likely see him hitting more towards the middle of the lineup in the future. With players like James Wood on the roster, things are looking up for the Washington Nationals.
5. Byron Buxton
Team: Minnesota Twins
Position: Center Fielder
Minnesota Twins’ centerfielder Byron Buxton remains one of the better defensive outfielders in baseball, while injuries have prevented him from compiling the offensive statistics he’s capable of. In 2025, Buxton managed to hit 35 home runs while missing 36 games. In 2022, he hit 28 dingers while playing barely half his team’s games. Last season, Buxton’s 11th, was his best statistically. It was also only the third time he played more than 100 games in a season.
Still a power and speed threat and defensive anchor at age 32, Buxton and the Twins are hoping there are some full seasons in his future. The numbers would be eye-popping.
4. Drake Baldwin
Team: Atlanta Braves
Position: CATCHER
The African-American baseball catcher is indeed rare. Josh Gibson and Charles Johnson immediately come to mind, and Atlanta Braves’ young backstop Drake Baldwin is the latest entry and brings high hopes. The 2025 National League Rookie of the Year has picked up where he left off during the early stages of the 2026 season as one of the top offensive and defensive contributors to an Atlanta Braves squad threatening to make mincemeat of the National League’s Eastern Division.
At the time of this writing, Baldwin is second on the team in home runs and RBI’s. But even more impressive, he’s played in all 43 games on the Braves’ schedule while leading the team in at-bats, both unusual for a catcher. At age 25, he’ll eventually want to go easy on the knees, but the Braves will take every at bat they can get and appear to be set behind the plate for many seasons to come.
3. Marcus Semien
Team: New York Mets
Position: SECOND BASE
In his first season with the New York Mets, Marcus Semien has made to transition to second base after many seasons as a two-time Golden Glove winning shortstop in the American League. Semien has been a consistent power and speed threat for at least a decade, in addition to being a slick-fielding infielder. While Semien has never hit for average, the Mets are hoping to tap into some of the magic Semien displayed in the American League, where he had personal season highs of 45 home runs and 25 stolen bases in addition to winning a Golden Glove award and a World Series with the Texas Rangers in 2023.
Now 35-years-old and in the latter stages of a solid career, he hopes to solidify the middle of the Mets’ defense while providing clutch hitting for a team in transition in 2026.
2. Mookie Betts
Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
Position: Right Fielder
Los Angeles Dodgers’ outfielder Mookie Betts clings to second place in our rankings despite having, by his standards, a sub-par 2025 season and a slow start in 2026. Betts has spent the past eleven MLB seasons terrorizing opponents with with his combination of power, speed, timely hitting and outfield defense.
The former American League Most Valuable Player and batting champion is also an eight-time All Star, six-time Golden Glove Winner and four time World Series winner. It will take more than an off season and a slow start to move him off this spot. Baseball fans will have several more years to enjoy the baseball achievements of the 33-year-old Betts, and the league is better off for it.
1. Aaron Judge
Team: New York Yankees
Position: Right Fielder
Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees performs in baseball’s toughest market, where his postseason struggles scream louder than his dominant regular-season performances. But despite not having brought a title back to the Bronx since his arrival ten years ago, the seven-time All-Star and American League’s Most Valuable Player three of the last four seasons continues to post Hall of Fame level statistics, including breaking for historic Yankee franchise’s record for home runs in one season with 62 in 2022.
In the past couple of MLB seasons, Judge has managed to escape the “injury prone” tag placed on him, missing only 14 regular season games over the past two seasons. At age 34, Judge still has time to change the narrative regarding his postseason production while breaking even more records.
