The 2022 MLB schedule is rolling along as the mid-summer classic is slowly approaching and the month of July is approaching the halfway point. As you start to look at the first few months of the 2022 MLB season, many great performances have been put together by some of the game’s top catchers. With these performances many wonder who the best current MLB catcher in 2022 is?

The game’s top catchers include the likes of past stars such as Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals, Wilson Contreras of the Chicago Cubs, and J.T. Realmuto of the Philadelphia Phillies While new faces have emerged as well including the Toronto Blue Jays star Alejandro Kirk and former Top MLB Prospect Adley Rutschman. 

With that said, here is the Top 10 Catchers 2022 Ranking list. 

Honorable Mention

Salvador Perez

Team: Kansas City Royals

Just missing the cut as one of the Top 10 MLB catchers, is the Kansas City Royals All-Star catcher Salvador Perez.

Perez, who has been considered if not the best catcher in baseball over the past few seasons and one of the best catchers, continues to put together strong numbers in 2022.

However, his .211 batting average has slid him down the list as the month of July continues to roll on. That said, Perez has posted 13 doubles, to go along with one triple, 11 home runs, and 34 runs batted in over 223 at bats this season.

Adley Rutschman

Team: Baltimore Orioles

One name to consider monitoring is the Baltimore Orioles young star Adley Rutschman who was called up to the Majors to make his Major League Debut on May 21st, 2022.

Through July 11th, 2022, the Orioles catcher is batting just .221 on the year but has posted a .307 On Base Percentage while also picking up 13 doubles to go along with one triple, four home runs, 12 runs batted in, and 16 walks.

Despite playing in just 41 games this season, Rutschman ranks 8th among all catchers in doubles and 5th in On Base Percentage. 

Top 10 MLB Catchers

10. Gary Sanchez

Team: Minnesota Twins

The former New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez continues to be one of the best hitting catchers in all of baseball.

Sanchez who is now an anchor within the Minnesota Twins lineup is batting .221 on the year with 10 home runs and 36 runs batted in across 240 total at bats during the 2022 MLB season.

In addition to his performance at the plate, Sanchez has thrown out 13 of 32 base runners attempting to steal bases on him this season. 

9. Sean Murphy

Team: Oakland A’s

One of the best catchers in baseball is the Oakland A’s catcher Sean Murphy. Murphy, who is just 27 years old, is coming off a solid 2021 MLB season at the plate while also taking home his first gold glove award at catcher.

In addition to being one of the games top defensive catchers, Murphy is batting .229 on the year while leading all catchers with 19 doubles through his first 279 at bats on the year. To go along with the doubles, Murphy has one triple, nine home runs and 34 runs batted in. 

8. J.T. Realmuto

Team: Philadelphia Phillies

An anchor within the Philadelphia Phillies lineup, J.T. Realmuto has been one of the best hitting catchers in all of baseball over the 5-6 MLB seasons and has continued to produce during the 2022 MLB season.

Realmuto is batting .236 on the year while posting an .310 On Base Percentage and picking up 20 extra base hits (11 doubles, two triples, and seven home runs).

In addition, Realmuto has picked up 35 runs batted in and scored 39 times for the Phillies looking to stay alive within the National League East division.

7. Travis d’Arnaud

Team: Atlanta Braves

Travis d’Arnaud, who was once a highly touted catching prospect in all of baseball, is putting together his best season at the plate since arriving at the MLB level in 2013.

The Atlanta Braves catcher is batting .265 on the year through his first 226 at bats is on pace to set career highs in doubles, home runs, runs batted in and runs scored.

Overall, d’Arnaud is batting .265 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs and 37 runs batted in while posting a .317 On Base Percentage. 

6. Jonah Heim

Team: Texas Rangers

The 27-year-old Texas Rangers catcher is on pace to put together his first full season at the Major League level in 2022 after appearing in 82 games last season.

In just 64 games this season, Heim has set career highs in hits with 56, total bases with 101, home runs with 12 and walks with 17.

In addition, Heim has been solid behind the plate throwing out five base runners on 43 stolen base attempts. Among catchers, Heim ranks tied for 3rd in home runs, 12th in runs batted in and 17th in doubles. 

5. Daulton Varsho

Team: Arizona Diamondbacks

Coming inside the top five on the Top 10 Catchers 2022 rankings list is the Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Daulton Varsho.

Varsho who is tied for 3rd among all catchers with 12 home runs has also posted 67 hits through his first 286 at bats this season.

While the Diamondbacks catcher has moved around the field this year, he has been solid behind the plate throwing out six of 18 base runners attempting to steal on him.

In addition to the 12 home runs, Varsho is batting .234 on the year with 15 doubles and 41 runs batted in. 

4. Will Smith

Team: Los Angeles Dodgers

Is Will Smith the best catcher in baseball? While that is one question many fans seem to ask, especially Los Angeles Dodgers fans, it is still a difficult question to answer.

Smith, who is one of the best catchers in baseball, has continued to put up solid numbers during the 2022 MLB schedule.

Smith is batting .257 on the year to go along with an .348 On Base Percentage mark and a .799 OPS.

The Dodgers catcher has also picked up 66 hits in 257 at bats including 11 doubles and 13 home runs while helping the team to the best record in the National League through the second week of July.

3. Christian Vazquez

Team: Boston Red Sox

Christian Vazquez is among the top of multiple offensive and defensive statistics within the group of MLB catchers.

One of those statistics he ranks up near the top with every catcher is the number of base runners thrown out to date.

Vazquez has thrown out 13 of the 43 base runners attempting to steal on him this season while also playing a key role in the Boston Red Sox success of their pitchers on the mound.

The success doesn’t stop there as Vazquez ranks tied for 3rd in doubles with 17, tied for 5th in runs batted in and is 2nd in batting average with a .292 mark.

2. Wilson Contreras

Team: Chicago Cubs

When you look around at the best catchers in the MLB 2022, Wilson Contreras name is a name that should appear on everyone’s list.

It doesn’t matter if you ask who the best defensive catcher in MLB is or who is the best offensive catcher in MLB, Contreras can do it all and be in consideration to answer both of those questions.

While the Chicago Cubs have struggled for most of the 2022 MLB season, Contreras has not as he heads to start for the National League All-Star team.

Contreras is batting .266 with 17 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs and 35 runs batted in while also posting a .384 On Base Percentage through 267 at bats this season.

1. Alejandro Kirk

Team: Toronto Blue Jays

Right now, it is easy to say who the best catcher in MLB 2022 is and that is the Toronto Blue Jays 23-year-old All-Star.

Kirk, who landed the starting catcher spot on the AL East All-Star team is putting together a brilliant season behind the plate while also being credited with the success the Blue Jays pitchers are having.

Kirk leads all catchers in batting average (.309) and hits (75), has also posted 32 walks, 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 33 runs batted in to start the 2022 MLB schedule.
