Top 10 Best College Football Team 2025-2026 Rankings
Updating the College Football Team Rankings of the 2025-2026 NCAA Football season as Fernando Mendoza and the Indiana Hoosiers are #1
Who is the Best College Football Team?
The 2025-2026 college football season delivered heart pumping excitement from the opening whistle to the final play of the National Championship game. As you look at the top 10 College Football Teams 2025-2026 rankings, the list is loaded with talented teams from traditional powerhouses such as the Ohio State Buckeyes and Georgia Bulldogs to up and coming powerhouses such as the Indiana Hoosiers who not only have showcased their ability to compete but win a National Championship.
With the new ways of building and rebuilding College Football from rebuilding of conferences, the evolution of NIL deals, and the transfer portal, any team has the ability to take the next big step forward. From coast to coast, Saturdays have featured wild swings in momentum, high‑octane offenses, and defenses scrambling to adapt to ever‑evolving schemes. In a year defined by parity and volatility, every drive, metric, and margin has mattered just a little more.
What jumps off the tape is how different these contenders win. Indiana and Miami suffocate with complementary efficiency and ball security, while Georgia and Ohio State still weaponize raw talent and explosiveness to overwhelm opponents. Texas Tech and Ole Miss stretch the field horizontally and vertically, forcing defenses to defend every blade of grass. Oregon and Utah live in the gray area, blending physicality with tempo and analytics‑driven aggression.
Here is a look at the Top 10 Best College Football Teams 2025-2026 Rankings:
Honorable Mention
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-2)
Conference: Non-Conference
Final AP Ranking: #10
Framed against the chaos of 2025, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish steadiness is what almost forced its way into the Top 10 College Football Teams 2025-2026 rankings conversation.
The Irish rode a high powered offense that averaged over 450 yards per game (458.5) to go along with the second most points scored in the nation (42.0) while the defense limited opponents to under 18 points per game (17.6). After a disappointing opening to the 2025-2026 season that featured back-to-back losses to AP Top 25 ranked opponents (Miami Hurricanes, Texas A&M Aggies), the Fighting Irish put together a strong finish to the season that included 10 straight wins with wins over both the USC Trojans and Pittsburgh Panthers.
Led by star running back Jeremiyah Love on the offensive side of the ball (1,372 rushing yards, 18 rushing touchdowns) while standout cornerback Leonard Moore anchored the defense (5 interceptions, 1 forced fumble). Despite the strong finish the Fighting Irish finished looking in at the College Football Playoffs.
Utah Utes (11-2)
Conference: Big 12
AP Ranking: #14
Momentum is the word that defines the Utah Utes push toward the edge of these rankings after a strong 11-2 season.
The Utes leaned into their identity: a rugged offense built around their run game that piled up more than 260 rushing yards per outing (266.3) to go along with 41.3 points per game while their defense stepped up when needed holding opponents to just under 19 points per game (18.9). Offensively, dual threat quarterback Devon Dampier carried the offense throwing for 2,490 yards with 24 passing touchdowns while adding 835 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns on the ground.
Meanwhile the defense was paced by talented defense end John Henry Daley who posted 11.5 of the team’ s 34 sacks. The Utes finished the season with a 2-2 record against AP Top 25 ranked teams and six straight wins including an impressive 44-22 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl.
Top 10 Best College Football Team Rankings
10. Oklahoma Sooners
Conference: SEC
AP Ranking: #13
Closing out the Top 10 College Football Teams 2025-2026 rankings list is an Oklahoma Sooners team that was as dominant as any team in the country from the opening whistle to their disappointing 34-24 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide within the College Football Playoffs.
Few résumés capture volatility and upside like Oklahoma’s, where a 10–3 finish came powered by a defense that ranked among the best in the country allowing seventh fewest number of points per game (15.5), and sixth fewest number of yards per game (272.5). Led by a talented group of stars on both sides of the ball that features star defensive weapons Kip Lewis and Peyton Bowen and strong play on offense under center with John Mateer.
Ultimately the Sooners finished the season with a 5-2 record against AP Top 25 ranked opponents. In a year this top‑heavy, the Sooners’ explosive metrics scream contender, but the occasional offensive struggles led to their exit in the College Football Playoffs as well as a higher ranking.
9. Alabama Crimson Tide (11-4)
Conference: SEC
AP Ranking: #9
Few teams would look at a season that included a trip to the College Football Playoffs as a failure, but that is the case with the Alabama Crimson Tide who had become accustomed to making a run at the National Championship.
After a devastating opening loss of the season to an unranked Florida State Seminoles squad, the Crimson Tide rebounded winning eight straight games including a four game stretch knocking off the Georgia Bulldogs, Vanderbilt Commodores, Missouri Tigers, and Tennessee Volunteers who were each ranked among the Top 16 teams in the country.
Led by Heisman caliber quarterback Ty Simpson the offense averaged 29.5 points per game however the team’s lack of run game limited them at times over the course of the season. Luckily however the team’s stacked defense that featured stars such as Yhonzae Pierre and Deontae Lawson limited opponents to under 20 points per game (19.2) helping to keep their team in nearly each contest all season.
8. Texas A&M Aggies (11-2)
Conference: SEC
AP Ranking: #8
What changed the narrative around the Texas A&M Aggies this fall was not just winning 11 games, but how thoroughly the Aggies controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides.
The offense leaned on a well balanced approach averaging 184.7 yards per game on the ground to complement a passing attack that averaged 259.8 yards per game through the air while averaging 33.8 points per game. Talented sophomore quarterback Marcell Reed helped lead that offense throwing for 3,169 yards and 25 passing touchdowns.
Meanwhile on the defensive side of the ball the Aggies were paced by All-American standout Cashius Howell. Howell helped lead an Aggies defense that allowed just 307.4 yards per game and 21 total points against a schedule loaded with loaded offenses.
Over the course of the season, the Aggies posted a 3-2 record against AP Top 25 ranked teams with a key win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish early in the season while one of their two losses came against a talented Miami Hurricanes team within the College Football Playoffs.
7. Texas Tech Red Raiders (12-2)
Conference: Big 12
AP Ranking: #7
Tempo and audacity are the signatures of the Texas Tech Red Raiders rise into the top tier, as a 12–2 campaign came with dominant performances on both sides of the football leading to standout performances on the scoreboard each week.
On the offensive side of the ball the Red Raiders finished the season ranked seventh in scoring averaging 39.4 points per game to go along with 461.4 yards per game. Led by a long list of talented weapons including the running back tandem of Cameron Dickey and J’Koby Williams while quarterbacks Behren Morton and Will Hammond combined to throw for 3,460 yards with 29 passing touchdowns. However, the Red Raiders’ Achilles heel was their loaded defense led by All-American Jacob Rodriguez that ranked among the best overall units in College Football.
The Red Raiders stingy defense allowed just 11.8 points per game and 258.3 yards per game of offense ranking third in the nation in each statistic. The strong two way performance helped the Red Raiders post a 3-1 record against AP Top 25 teams with their single loss coming against a talented Oregon Ducks team in the College Football Playoffs.
6. Georgia Bulldogs (12-2)
Conference: SEC
AP Ranking: #6
Heading into each College Football season, the expectations are set high for the SEC conference with the Georgia Bulldogs headlining the list of teams expected to compete for not only a Conference Championship but a trip to the College Football Playoffs.
The Bulldogs met those expectations all season rebounding from a 24-21 early season loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide to win nine straight games including a 28-7 rematch against the Tide to win the SEC Championship.
The Bulldogs rallied around a strong defensive led team that allowed just 17.6 points per game and 298 yards per game all season. Headlining their performance on defense is a long list of NFL caliber prospects including CJ Allen, KJ Bolden, and Chris Cole. Meanwhile Gunner Stockton was strong all season passing for 2,894 yards with 24 touchdowns to just five interceptions.
The strong two way performance all season helped the Bulldogs post a 5-2 record against AP Top 25 ranked opponents. However a strong regular season was left spoiled with the team’s disappointing 39-34 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels in the College Football Playoffs.
5. Oregon Ducks (12-2)
Conference: Big Ten
AP Ranking: #4
Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 College Football Teams 2025-2026 rankings list is the Oregon Ducks. Efficiency is the word that best captures the Ducks 13–2 charge, with the Ducks marrying top‑tier explosiveness to one of the most balanced statistical profiles on both sides of football in the country.
Offensively, the Ducks led by Heisman caliber quarterback Dante Moore ranked among the best offensive units in the game averaging 452.2 yards per game and 36.9 points per game over their 15 games. However, the team’s defense led by a long list of standouts including Teitum Tuioti and Bryce Boettcher was as good as advertised finishing the season ranked seventh in fewest number of yards allowed per game (273.7) and 12th in points per game allowed (17.9).
The combination of a high powered offense that scores with a defense that shut down opponents, the wins stacked up fast all season. This proven success formula helped the Ducks roll to a 13-2 overall record with their season coming to an end in the College Football Playoff Semifinal showdown against the eventual National Champions the Indiana Hoosiers.
4. Ohio State Buckeyes (12-2)
Conference: Big Ten
AP Ranking: #5
As you look around at the best College Football teams from the 2025-2026 season, it is hard to not look at the Ohio State Buckeyes as one of those teams.
After winning the National Championship the year before, the Buckeyes never let that success slow them down, steamrolling to 12 straight wins to open the season before losing to the eventual National Champions Indiana Hoosiers inside the Big Ten Championship game. The Buckeyes rallied around the best overall defense in the country all season, a unit that allowed just 9.3 points per game and 219.1 yards per offense per game. Leading that success was All-American safety Caleb Downs and top caliber stars such as Arvell Reese, Caleb Downs, Caden Curry and Kayden McDonald.
Meanwhile talented quarterback Julia Sayin posted 3,610 yards and 32 touchdowns while earning Heisman Trophy consideration and Jeremiah Smith continued his reign as the top wide receiver in the country. Ultimately the Buckeyes were limited to just 14 points in a disappointing loss to the Miami Hurricanes in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in their only College Football Playoff matchup.
3. Ole Miss Rebels (13-2)
Conference: SEC
AP Ranking: #3
Explosiveness defined the Ole Miss Rebels 13–2 surge, with Lane Kiffin’s offense finally marrying big plays to the kind of efficiency that wins into January.
Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss (3,937 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns) fueled an offense that finished the season averaging the second most yards in the nation (489.7) to go along with 36.9 points per game. On the defensive side of the ball the Rebels didn’t bend within the red zone holding opponents to just 21.1 points per game across the season. The Rebels rolled to an impressive regular season posting a 2-1 record against AP Top 25 ranked opponents.
However the strong success led to Kiffin’s departure as the LSU Tigers opening pried him loose. Despite losing Kiffin the Rebels continued their success into the College Football Playoffs picking up wins over the Tulane Rockets and Georgia Bulldogs before falling just short in the VRBO Fiesta Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes.
Nonetheless it is hard to take away the success the Rebels had and their perseverance shown after switching to a new head coach to finish out the season.
2. Miami Hurricanes (13-3)
Conference: ACC
AP Ranking: #2
Balance is the hallmark of the Miami Hurricanes success all season as the team jumped back into the national spotlight, with a 13-3 record while coming up just short in the National Championship game.
The Hurricanes used a strong finish to the regular season including four straight wins to earn a spot into the College Football Playoffs while a key 27-24 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to open the season paving their way into the playoffs. The Hurricanes used a staggering defense led by stars Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain Jr to allow just 14.8 points per game and 294.1 yards per offense per game.
Meanwhile transfer portal acquisition Carson Beck delivered under center passing for 3,813 yards to go along with 30 passing touchdowns to just 12 interceptions. While their regular season looked solid, the Hurricanes success including three straight wins in the playoffs over the Texas A&M Aggies, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Ole Miss Rebels helped a once historic College Football program return to the National Championship spotlight.
Ultimately however the Hurricanes came up yards short of knocking off the Indiana Hoosiers to win the championship.
1. Indiana Hoosiers (16-0)
Conference: Big Ten
AP Ranking: #1
Sitting atop the Top 10 College Football Teams 2025-2026 rankings, the Indiana Hoosiers capped off a historical season taking home the schools first football National Championship while becoming the first 16-0 undefeated champion with the expansion of the College Football Playoffs.
Indiana’s 16–0 masterpiece is one of the most statistically staggering runs the sport has seen in years. Offensively, the Hoosiers blended precise quarterback play from Fernando Mendoza who took home the Heisman Trophy along with stellar play from wide receivers Omar Cooper Jr and Elijah Sarrat. In addition the trio of Roman Hemby, Kaelon Black and Khobie Martin at running back was unstoppable on the ground.
The strong offensive performance finished the season ranked third in scoring posting 41.6 points per game to go along with 452 yards of offense per game. On the defensive side of the football the Hoosiers were as stingy as any team allowing just 266 yards of offense and the second fewest number of points allowed per game (11.7). Headlining the defense was a long list of stars including standout defensive back Louis Moore as well as linebackers Rolijah Hardy and Isiah Jones.
The Hoosiers finished the season 6-0 against AP Top 25 ranked teams, a group that included the Ohio State Buckeyes inside the Big Ten Championship as well as the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks and eventually the Miami Hurricanes in the National Championship Game.
