The game of football is built around a wide range of positions on both sides of the football coming together. One of those positions that is often overlooked in college football is the offensive tackle position.

When it comes to the offensive tackle position the left tackle position is typically the more glorified of the two when comparing it to the right tackle position.

However, both positions are key in protecting the quarterback while also being a force within any college football team’s ability to run the football. When you look at the Top 10 College Football Offensive Tackles 2023 Rankings each one is a game changer.

Headlining the list of the top offensive tackles in college football is the Ohio State Buckeyes Paris Johnson Jr who made the transition to left tackle this season.

Johnson Jr played a key role in the success of the Buckeyes offense while making a run to the College Football Playoffs.

Meanwhile other top college football offensive tackles include left tackle Anton Harrison from the Oklahoma Sooners, left tackle Peter Skoronski from the Northwestern Wildcats, and left tackle Broderick Jones of the Georgia Bulldogs. Here is a look at the Top 10 College Football Offensive Tackle January 2023 rankings:

Honorable Mention

Blake Freeland

School: BYU Cougars

Position: Right Tackle
NFL Draft Status: 2023 NFL Draft

While there is hardly any type of statistics to go on for offensive tackles, offensive guards, and centers, game film and physical metrics play a key role in determining how good of an offensive tackle or offensive lineman is.

Freeland has all the metrics that NFL teams are looking for while also putting together an impressive game film since arriving for the BYU Cougars. Freeland sits at 6 foot 8 inches, and weights 305 while having solid arm size and arm span.

More importantly over the course of the 2022 NCAA Football schedule, Freeland allowed just five quarterback hurries to go along with zero sacks.

Jaelyn Duncan

School: Maryland Terps

Position: Left Tackle
NFL Draft Status: 2023 NFL Draft

Landing just outside of the Top 10 College Football Offensive Tackle January 2023 rankings is the Maryland Terps left tackle Jaelyn Duncan. Duncan who recently announced he would enter the 2023 NFL Draft.

Duncan, who might not be as polished as many of the top tier offensive tackles in college football has all the tangibles plus some that can help him develop into a top tier left tackle in the NFL.

Duncan weighs in at 320 pounds to go along with his 6-foot 6-inch body while providing both long arms and tremendous strength.

Despite lacking great arm length, Duncan is extremely athletic which bodes well for tackles going into the NFL.

Top 10 Best Tackles In College Football

10. Tyler Steen

School: Alabama Crimson Tide

Position: Left Tackle
NFL Draft Status: 2023 NFL Draft

Landing in at number 10 on the Top 10 College Football Offensive Tackle January 2023 rankings list is the Alabama Crimson Tide left tackle Tyler Steen.

Over the years we have come to expect talented offensive tackles from the Crimson Tide and Steen fits that bill this season.

Steen transferred to Alabama for his senior season performing well while showing tremendous improvement from his previous season with Vanderbilt.

Steen dropped his sack allowed total from five to two while improving both his run blocking as well as his pass blocking.

9. Dawand Jones

School: Ohio State Buckeyes

Position: Right Tackle
NFL Draft Status: 2023 NFL Draft

All size and muscle with the Ohio State Buckeyes big right tackle who has shown his ability to play both tackle positions on the offensive line.

Dawand Jones who lists at 6 foot 8 inches and weighs in at 350 pounds is a monster on the offensive line while also being a freak athlete on the field for a player of that size.

Jones has shown tremendous blocking abilities while ranking high both as a run blocking tackle as well as a passing blocker.

Playing for the Buckeyes who saw a long list of talented defensive stars, Jones allowed just four quarterback hurries to go along with zero sacks and zero hits on his quarterback CJ Stroud.

8. Matthew Bergeron

School: Syracuse Orange

Position: Left Tackle
NFL Draft Status: 2023 NFL Draft

Depending on how you are analyzing Matthew Bergeron and the metrics being used to rank him, the Syracuse Orange left tackle is well deserving of a spot within the Top 10 NCAA Football offensive tackles list.

Bergeron will enter the 2023 NFL Draft while sitting at 6 foot 5 inches tall and 322 pounds. The Orange left tackle showcased his ability to be a tremendous player on the line however lack of arm length and arm span are concerns leading up to the 2023 NFL draft.

However, on the field Bergeron who could slot in either left or right tackle allowed just two quarterback hurries and five sacks over 11 games played this season.

7. Jonah Monheim

School: USC Trojans

Position: Right Tackle
NFL Draft Status: Undecided/Projected to return to USC.

While the question on whether Jonah Monheim will return to the USC Trojans for another season or enter the 2023 NFL Draft has yet to be answered, one thing is for certain he ranks as one of the best offensive lineman in college football.

Standing in at nearly 300 pounds and 6 foot 5 inches tall, many would consider Monheim undersized by not reaching that 300-pound mark the NFL likes in their offensive lineman.

Nonetheless on the field the Trojans right tackle who has played all over the line has shown tremendous improvement from his first season as a starter to the second while continuing to improve in both the run and pass game blocking.

6. Cody Mauch

School: North Dakota State Bisons

Position: Left Tackle
NFL Draft Status: 2023 NFL Draft

One offensive tackle that may not get the same recognition as some of the other top tackles in college football is Cody Mauch of the North Dakota State Bisons.

The Bisons left tackle isn’t your typical big offensive lineman who is built around their size and weight. Mauch while standing at 6 foot 6 inches tall, and 303 pounds is another tremendous athletic lineman who actually arrived on campus as a tight end and defensive end.

No matter if the Bisons were running or throwing, Mauch could move lateral with a ton of energy while also being able to move north when the ball was on the ground.

5. Darnell Wright

School: Tennessee Volunteers

Position: Right Tackle
NFL Draft Status: 2023 NFL Draft

Playing the left tackle position when a majority of the quarterbacks around college football and the NFL are right-handed is one of the most important positions in the NFL.

One of those left tackles that rank near the top among the best in college football is the Oklahoma Sooners star Anton Harrison.

Despite lacking the footwork as a few of the other top tier offensive tackles, Harrison is still talented enough to be a great offensive tackle while also developing his all-around game.

Harrison showcased his ability to pass block as one of the best passing blocking offensive tackles. In 12 games in 2022, Harrison allowed just one sack and eight quarterback hurries.

School: Northwestern Wildcats

Position: Left Tackle

As many expect Peter Skoronski to be one of the first offensive tackles off the draft board during the 2023 NFL Draft, his performance on the college football field was the push factor making him one of the best talents among the offensive tackle positions.

While he stands at just 6 foot 4 inches, he makes up for it with his tremendous footwork and explosiveness that allows him to move the defensive line and set the position to create mismatches for players on the defensive side of the football.
