Ranking the best Offensive Guards in College Football for the 2023 NCAA season as Cooper Beebe of the Kansas State Wildcats leads the way

The success of any football team at any level starts with both sides of the football playing as one unit while helping to set each other up for success. This includes on both the offensive and defensive lines which ultimately allows one side of the football to move the ball while limiting the other side to no offensive success. On the offensive side of the football the offensive line delivers protection for the quarterback while opening lanes up for the running backs. While most of the attention is handed to the offensive tackle positions, it is hard to look past the importance of the offensive guard position. Nonetheless as you start to look around at the best offensive lines in the country, each has one if not two offensive guards that warrant consideration for a spot on the Top 10 Best Offensive Guards in College Football 2023 Rankings list.

One of those offensive guards that stands out atop the list of the best offensive guards in college football is the Kansas State Wildcats senior Cooper Beebe. Beebe is a big strong physical guard who has both size and strength to dominate on the inside of the offensive line.

His production on the field over his career with the Cougar has landed him as one of the top offensive guards in the country as well as one of the top overall players heading into the 2024 NFL Draft.

As Beebe continues to shine at the offensive guard position, an extensive list of talented guards have stepped up during the 2023-2024 NCAA Football season including Layden Robinson of the Texas A&M Aggies, Zak Zinter of the Michigan wolverines, Christian Haynes of the UConn Huskies, and Xavier Truss of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Honorable Mention

Marcus Harper II

School: Oregon Ducks

Just missing the Top 10 Best Offensive Guards in College Football 2023 Rankings list is the Oregon Ducks Marcus Harper II. Harper II who may elect to forego his senior season to enter the 2024 NFL Draft put together a strong season while helping the Ducks to rank among the best offensive teams in college football while finishing the regular season ranked 6th on the AP Top 25 rankings.

Harper is a big strong physical guard who has is not afraid to punish an opposing defender while helping to free up running lanes as well as to help Bo Nix stay up right.

With Harper on the offensive line, the Ducks finished the season averaging the second most yards in the nation with 541.1 yards per game while also averaging 45.3 points per game. In addition, with the impressive performance of the offensive line, quarterback Nix is currently a favorite to take home the Heisman Trophy Award. 

McKade Mettauer

School: Oklahoma Sooners

While the list of top offensive guards is lengthy, it is hard to look past McKade Mettauer while helping to lead the Oklahoma Sooners to third ranked offensive attack in the nation.

The Sooners capped off the season averaging 502.4 yards per game while joining the LSU Tigers, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Oregon Ducks as the only teams in college football to surpass 500 yards per game.

Despite missing time due to an injury, Mettauer has been an anchor on the line while delivering the Sooners an extremely smart player who understands the blocking schemes to help the entire line be successful.

10. Christian Mahogany

School: Boston College Eagles

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 Best Offensive Guards in College Football 2023 Rankings list is the Boston College Eagles offensive guard Christian Mahogany.

Mahogany who is currently ranked among the 10 best offensive guards potentially Mahogany who was sidelined for the entire 2022 NCAA Football season after tearing his ACL entered the current season as one of the highest ranked guards in the country and one that should hear his name potentially called during the opening round of the NFL Draft.

The Eagles guard is a two way guard who can block in passing situations or during running plays while using his size and length to make the plays needed. While Mahogany lacked the top ranked program as others on the list, the senior guard had the potential to leave through the transfer portal but elected to return to the Eagles to tune himself back into an elite guard which he showcased during the season.

9. Miles Frazier

School: LSU Tigers

When your team finishes as the top ranked offense in college football in both yards per game (547.8) and scoring (46.4), it is easy to understand why at least one if not both of the offensive guards land among the best in the game.

One of those offensive guards is Miles Frazier who helped solidify the Tigers offensive line while allowing them to throw for 334.3 yards per game and rush for 213.5 yards per game.

On the line Frazier used his size at nearly 6 foot 6 inches to overpower defenders while freeing up time and keeping Heisman Trophy Candidate Jayden Daniels free to make plays with both his arm and legs. 

8. Layden Robinson

School: Texas A&M Aggies 

Another impressive offensive guard who has the potential to play at either the left guard or right guard position is the Texas A&M Aggies guard Layden Robinson.

Robinson, who is slated as one of the top guards in the country as the college football season comes to an end, was impressive for most if not all of the current season.

The former three star recruit blossomed into an everyday starter at the right guard position while limiting defenders the opportunity to get to the quarterback on each pass attempt. The Aggies right guard is aggressive while ranking as a better run blocker than pass blocker despite being strong at both skills.

7. Javion Cohen

School: Miami Hurricanes

A name to remember when it comes to the top NFL offensive guards during the 2023-2024 NCAA season is Javion Cohen who has announced he will be entering the NFL Draft. Cohen was a former three star recruit who has shown flashes of being a great offensive guard at the next level as well as for the Miami Hurricanes.

Cohen, who lists at 6 foot 4 inches while weighing in around 305 pounds showcased his pass blocking strength all season for the Hurricanes after transferring to the program after spending three seasons with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Hurricanes offensive guard is a versatile style guard who can block straight up front or used to get outside to free up the running game to get to the outside. Cohen enters the 2024 NFL Draft ranked among the best guards in college football.

6. Donovan Jackson

School: Ohio State Buckeyes

Year after year the Ohio State Buckeyes continue to produce talented players on both sides of the ball. The 2023-2024 NCAA Football season was no different with an extensive list of players stepping up for the Buckeyes including offensive guard Donovan Jackson.

The 6 foot 4 inch left guard from Bellaire, Texas put together a second straight strong season for the Buckeyes after joining the team as a four star recruit from Episcopal High School leading into the 2021 NCAA Football season.

Jackson showcases extreme athleticism as a lineman who can manage both pass blocking and run blocking schemes. The Buckeyes lineman showcased his ability to attack up front while also using his athleticism to get outside as a pull blocker or get up field to produce running lanes.

5. Xavier Truss

School: Georgia Bulldogs

Rounding out the Top 10 Best Offensive Guards in College Football 2023 Rankings list is Xavier Truss of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Truss who lands among the best guards list with teammate Tate Ratledge is a versatile offensive lineman who spent time during the 2023-2024 NCAA Football season playing left guard as well as right tackle due to injury issues with the Bulldogs lineman.

Nonetheless Truss has been equally impressive at both positions however the Bulldogs senior slots in as a better guard heading into the NFL Draft. Truss is both physical and strong while ranking strong both in pass blocking situations as well as against the run. With Truss on the line alongside Ratledge and the rest of the Bulldogs lineman, that team continues to rank among the best offensive teams in college football.

4. Christian Haynes

School: UConn Huskies

The UConn Huskies football team does not get a ton of recognition compared to the top football teams in the country. Nonetheless the Huskies have found some solid players over the years with Christian Haynes being the team’s most recent success.

Haynes is coming off an impressive season on the line for the Huskies while ranking among the best offensive guards in college football. Haynes, who is from Bowie Maryland, allowed no sacks last season while continuing that success this season.

The 6 foot 2 inch guard who is physical and fast for an interior lineman while having the power to get up the field and open up blocks. Haynes wraps up the season as one of the better all-around blockers in the game both in passing situations as well as within the run game.

3. Zak Zinter

School: Michigan Wolverines

As you start to look at the top offensive guards in the country it is hard to not consider the Michigan Wolverines guard among those players.

Zinter, who repeated as an All-Big Ten first team selection, was also an early candidate for the Outland Trophy while being nominated on the Outland Trophy watch list.

Zinter who is expected to be a hot commodity come the NFL Draft however will miss the Big Ten Championship game as well as either the team’s Bowl Game or College Football Playoff matchup after breaking both his fibula and tibia just last weekend in the teams key win over Ohio State.

2. Tate Ratledge

School: Georgia Bulldogs

When you look at the Georgia Bulldogs success all season long it all starts with the incredibly talented roster on both sides of the football.

This includes on the offensive line that is loaded with talent including Tate Ratledge who is in the running to land a spot on the All-SEC First Team based on his production of play on the football field.

The 6 foot 6 inch offensive lineman has been brilliant all season long in both pass blocking and run blocking situations. With Ratledge up front the Bulldogs finished the season scoring the eighth most points in the nation with 39.6 per game as well as racking up nearly 500 yards (496.4) yards of offense each game.

Now Ratledge has the opportunity to lead the Bulldogs to a third straight SEC Championship and another trip to the College Football Playoffs.

1. Cooper Beebe

School: Kansas State Wildcats

In at number one on the Top 10 Best Offensive Guards in College Football 2023 Rankings list is the Kansas State Wildcats senior Cooper Beebe.

Beebe, who was recently selected to the All-Big 12 First Team for the third time of his career, is as physical as any offensive guard in the country while having the physical attributes and the understanding of the playbook to dominate the position.

His production on the field during the 2023-2024 NCAA Football schedule landed him his second straight Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year award. Now with the NFL Draft approaching, Beebe will have an opportunity to take that talent to the next level.

On the year, the Wildcats finished 12th in the country in scoring averaging 37.8 points per game to go along with 446.1 yards per game. In addition, Beebe is nominated as a finalist for the Outland Trophy Award which is handed to top interior lineman in the country.
