The 2022-23 NBA Season is heading towards the finish line as the NBA Finals are heating up with the final two teams in the NBA battling for the NBA Championship.

As the end of the season is just around the corner, the perfect opportunity to take a look at the Top 10 NBA Coaches 2023 Rankings list has arrived.

As you start to look around the NBA the league is loaded with talented NBA coaches who have the ability to lead their respective teams to the NBA playoffs while also finding ways to manage playing time, NBA stardom, and building team chemistry.

One name that stands out as one of the best NBA coaches is the Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone. Malone found a way to lead his Nuggets to the playoffs last season despite multiple key injuries.

Fast forward a season later, the Nuggets took the top seed in the Western Conference while cruising to the 2023 NBA Finals. On the other side another top tier NBA coach is Erik Spoelstra who has the Miami Heat back in the NBA Finals for the second time over the past five NBA seasons.

Joining Malone and Spoelstra among the Top 10 coaches in the NBA includes Joe Mazzulla of the Boston Celtics, former Milwaukee Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer, and Taylor Jenkins of the Memphis Grizzlies. Here is a look at the Top 10 NBA Head Coaches 2023 Rankings list.

Honorable Mention

Steve Kerr

Team: Golden State Warriors

Landing just outside of the Top 10 Best Coaches in the NBA currently is the Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr. Looking back at his success including leading the Warriors to the NBA Championship last season Kerr would land at number one, however the Warriors finished 6th in the Western Conference while also dealing with on/off the court drama as well as injuries.

Nonetheless despite the drama Kerr found a way to get the Warriors back into the NBA Playoffs after posting a 44-38 record during the 2022-23 NBA schedule. On the season the Warriors ranked 2nd in the Western Conference while averaging 117.1 points per game.

Monty Williams

Team: Phoenix Suns (Former Head Coach)

Another busy off-season for NBA coaches including the former Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams. Despite leading the back to the playoffs during the regular season while winning 45 games, Williams was let go by the Suns after failing to advance within the NBA Playoffs despite landing Kevin Durant before the NBA trade deadline.

Nonetheless his ability to coach ranks among the best while finding ways to win with top stars including Chris Paul as well as Kevin Durant dealing with injuries during the regular season.

The Suns finished the season averaging 113.6 point per game while holding opponents to the 6th lowest points per game (111.6) mark in the NBA.

Top 10 NBA Coaches

10. Tom Thibodeau

Team: New York Knicks

Coming in at number on the Top 10 NBA Coaches 2023 Rankings list is the New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau. It is hard to look past Thibodeau as one of the top coaches in the NBA while leading the Knicks back to the NBA playoffs after missing the playoffs during the 2021-22 NBA season.

The Knicks would finish the 2022-23 NBA regular season with a 47-35 overall record while landing at 5th in the Eastern Conference. Once reaching the NBA Playoffs, the Knicks would eliminate the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games in the Eastern Conference First Round before being eliminated by the Miami Heat in six games in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

Thibodeau has the Knicks among the top teams in the Eastern Conference despite lacking a big two or big three combination of top tier NBA stars.

9. J.B. Bickerstaff

Team: Cleveland Cavaliers

One of the impressive younger teams in the NBA during the 2022-23 NBA schedule was the Cleveland Cavaliers led by J.B. Bickerstaff.

The Cavaliers, who featured 13 NBA players at various times during the season who were 26 or younger finished the season with an impressive 51-31 record while finishing the regular season with a strong 7-3 push to move up their seeding in the Eastern Conference.

In addition to the success in the win-loss column the Cavaliers finished the season allowing the fewest points in the NBA at just 106.9 points per game.

Despite the strong regular season, the Cavaliers failed to get past the first round of the NBA playoffs. Bickerstaff should have the Cavaliers competing in the Eastern Conference for many years to come.

8. Mike Daigneault

Team: Oklahoma City Thunder

When you look around at NBA rosters and the final 2022-23 NBA Standings it is hard to not like what Mike Daigneault did with the Oklahoma City Thunder during his third NBA Season.

A team built around youth and without one top tier NBA star, the Thunder finished the season with a 40-42 record and a Play-In Berth within a talented Western Conference.

This success occurred despite losing the teams 2nd overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft Chet Holmgren prior to the season. Daigneault found a way to get the most out of his team including Shea Gilgeous-Alexander who finished averaging 31.4 points per game to go along with 4.8 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game.

In addition to Gilgeous-Alexander success the Thunder saw success with multiple young stars including Josh Giddey, Jalen Williams, and Luguentz Dort who all averaged at least 13 points per game.

7. Doc Rivers

Team: Philadelphia 76ers (Former Head Coach)

One of the best NBA coaches year in and year out has been the long time NBA coach Doc Rivers. Rivers who projected himself among the top NBA coaches after leading the Boston Celtics to the 2008 NBA Championship.

However, despite winning a championship and leading multiple talented teams to the NBA Playoffs Rivers has failed to win a second championship.

This includes during the 2022-23 NBA Season despite featuring the NBA MVP Joel Embiid and former NBA MVP James Harden. With Rivers as the coach, the 76ers would finish the regular season with the 3rd best record in the NBA after posting a 54-28 overall record.

That success rolled over to the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs as the 76ers swept the Brooklyn Nets. However, despite getting out to a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals the 76ers failed to reach the Eastern Conference Finals after losing back-to-back games to the Celtics.

6. Mike Brown

Team: Sacramento Kings

As far as one of the top candidates for NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown is well deserving of being crowned the 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year.

Brown was able to lead a very young Sacramento Kings team to a 48-34 record during the regular season. More impressively the Kings snapped an NBA Playoff drought dating back to the 2006 NBA Playoffs after finishing the season with the 3rd best record in the Western Conference.

Despite lacking top tier NBA stars in a loaded Western Conference, the Kings finished the season ahead of other superstar led teams including the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers.

5. Taylor Jenkins

Team: Memphis Grizzlies

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 NBA Coaches 2023 Rankings list is the Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins. Jenkins put together an impressive resume during the 2022-23 while dealing with off the court issues to the teams top NBA star JA Morant.

Despite losing Morant to a suspension the Grizzlies kept on winning while finishing the NBA regular season with a 51-31 overall record while securing the 2nd seed in the Western Conference.

On the season the Grizzlies finished 4th in the NBA in points differential outscoring their opponents by 3.9 points per game over the course of the 2022-23 NBA Schedule.

4. Mike Budenholzer

Team: Milwaukee Bucks (Former Coach)

Another talented NBA coach who found himself without an NBA coaching job after an impressive 2022-23 NBA season was the former Milwaukee Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer.

While Budenholzer helped improve the Milwaukee Bucks playoff history over the past few seasons the team has failed to reach the NBA Finals for the second straight season despite finishing with the best record in the NBA (58-24).

While the playoff collapse was not directly due to him, an injury to star Giannis Antetokounmpo played a key role. Nonetheless it is hard to look past the success the bucks had during the regular season while posting an impressive 32-9 home record.

3. Joe Mazzulla

Team: Boston Celtics

What a few seasons it has been for the Boston Celtics reaching the NBA Finals despite all the off the court issues with the teams former coach.

Joe Mazzulla would step in as an interim head coach while leading the team to the NBA Finals. Mazzulla continued that success this season behind the teams stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown while posting the second-best record in the NBA after winning 57 of their 82 games during the regular season.

The Celtics were as good as any team on both ends of the floor while leading the NBA with a 6.5-point differential during the 2022-23 NBA Regular season.

While the Celtics came up just short of reaching the NBA Finals, the heart shown during the teams Eastern Conference Finals comeback to force a game seven after losing the first three games was impressive.

2. Erik Spoelstra

Team: Miami Heat

One NBA coach worthy of a mention among the best coaches in the NBA is the Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. Spoelstra who has guided the Miami Heat to two NBA Championships has the Heat back in the NBA Finals for the second time over the past five NBA seasons despite not featuring a big two or big three tandem.

The latest success came after the Heat posted a 44-38 NBA record and a 7th seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. After an impressive regular season, the post season has been just as impressive as the Heat knocked off the talented Milwaukee Bucks in five games, the New York Knicks in six games and the Boston Celtic to reach the NBA Finals.

1. Michael Malone

Team: Denver Nuggets

In at number one on the Top 10 NBA Coaches 2023 Rankings list is the Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone who has guided the team to the 2023 NBA Finals.

After finishing the 2021-22 NBA Season as a six seed in the Western Conference the Nuggets flipped to the top spot in a loaded Western Conference led by Nikola Jokic.

With Jokic playing at a high level and the team at near full strength after battling multiple injuries to the team’s other top stars last season, the Nuggets finished with the best record in the conference after winning 53 of 82 games during the regular NBA Season. The Nuggets have continued that success in the playoffs including sweeping the Los Angeles in the Western Conference Finals.
