The 2021-2022 NCAA Women’s Basketball schedule is rolling along as we reach the middle point of February. For many of the top Women’s Basketball programs the race to one of the four final four positions started on the opening tip off of the regular season. For most of the Top 10 Women’s Basketball teams, their fate into the Women’s NCAA Championship is nearly set while the focus is on finishing the season strong.

One team that has continued their dominance from the start of the regular season to present days is the South Carolina Gamecocks who have won 23 of their first 24 games while knocking off some of the best women’s college basketball programs in the country. Meanwhile, the Stanford Cardinals found a way to make a huge jump to number two overall while Louisville Cardinals and NC State Wolfpack remain near the top.

With that said, here is our Power Rankings of the Top 10 Women’s Basketball Teams

Honorable Mention

Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines have been as strong as any team in the country while taking over the top spot in the Big Ten Conference after winning 20 of their first 24 contests. While they have looked impressive for most of the season the team has struggled of late losing two straight games against unranked teams including a 63-57 loss to Michigan State.

In all the Wolverines are 7-1 against teams ranked inside of the Top 25 at the time of their meeting. If the Wolverines can bounce back in a key matchup against Maryland as well as in their final two games against Michigan State and Iowa, the team could find themselves near the top five.

Tennessee Volunteers

After making big strides to start the season the Tennessee Lady Volunteers have struggled of late losing two of their last four contests as well as three of their last six overall games. Despite their struggles, the Lady Volunteers are as solid as any team in the country while being led by junior guard Jordan Horston.

Horston is a game changer who is averaging career highs in points per game (16.4), rebounds per game (9.6) and blocked shots per game (1.0). The Volunteers have four games remaining on their schedule including two top 25 ranked showdowns with a chance to compete for the SEC title.

Top 10 Women’s Basketball Rankings

10. UConn Huskies

Over the past month of the season the UConn Huskies were as good as any team in the country winning eight of their ten matchups including a key 75-56 win over the Tennessee Volunteers back on February 6th, 2022.

Despite being without star Paige Bueckers for most of the 2021-22 season, the UConn Huskies continue to win games as six different players have stepped up over that stretch to average at least eight points a game while eight different players have averaged at least 22 minutes. As the time table for Bueckers’ return is slowly emerging, the Huskies could be ready for a deep run come March.

9. LSU Tigers

After disappointing losses to Florida and Arkansas on the road to end January, the LSU Tigers have bounced back strongly winning four straight contests including wins against the Kentucky Wildcats and the 17th ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Overall the Tigers have won four of their first six games against teams ranked inside of the Top 25.

Leading the team’s charge is senior guard Khayla Pointer who is averaging 19.3 points a game to go along with 6.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. The Tigers will wrap up the season with four games including two against Top 25 ranked programs in Florida and Tennessee.

8. Baylor Bears

When looking at the Women’s Basketball programs on this list the one program that might not be getting the recognition that is deserving is the Baylor Bears. Despite losing five contests to start the season, four of those five losses came against Top 25 ranked programs while posting three wins against programs ranked in the Top 25.

One dangerous weapon and star that continues to give opponents struggles is the team’s potential All-American Nalyssa Smith who ranks 9th in the country averaging 21.3 points a game and 17th in the country in rebounding averaging 11.2 rebounds per game. The Bears have six games remaining over the next 19 days as they look to move up the standings inside the Big 12 conference.

7. Arizona Wildcats

The Arizona Wildcats are led by senior forward Cate Reese who is putting together a stellar senior season averaging a team high 15.2 points a game to go along with 6.3 rebounds. In addition to Reese, the Wildcats have five other routine players averaging at least 21 minutes per game while four other players are averaging at least 11 minutes a game.

This has allowed the Wildcats to pick up 18 wins over their first 22 matchups including winning three of their last four contests as well as six of their last 10 including wins over both Oregon and Colorado who were ranked inside of the Top 10. To close out the year, the Wildcats have matchups against Washington, Washington State, UCLA and USC to finish the year.

6. Indiana Hoosiers

One of the big surprises on the Top 10 Women’s BB teams list is the Indiana Hoosiers who not many expected to be a Top 10 program this season. Nonetheless, the Hoosiers have not disappointed this season posting an 18-4 record while finding a way to lead the Big Ten conference.

The Hoosiers currently have five different players averaging double figures while the tandem of Mackenzie Holmes and Grace Berger are averaging 33.9 points a game to go along with 14.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists per contest. Down the stretch the Hoosiers have four games remaining including two against 22nd ranked Iowa and one against 13th ranked Maryland Terps.

5. NC State Wolfpack

It is pretty amazing to see the NC State Wolfpack sitting at 22-3 after their first 25 contests after witnessing the schedule they have conquered to start the season. The Wolfpack have faced 9 ranked programs while winning six of the nine contests including an opening loss to start the season against the top ranked South Carolina Gamecocks.

As Elissa Cunane continues to lead the charger, the Wolfpack has a deep roster with only one other player averaging double digit points. The difficult schedule continues over the next three including yet alone another Top 25 showdown.

4. Iowa State Cyclones

However you slot in the Iowa State Cyclones, it might still not be right as this team is as good as any team in the country with arguably not one but two of the top players in the country taking the floor night in and night out.

Much like the NC State Wolfpack, all three of the Cyclones losses came at teams ranked inside of the Top 25 at some point this season. Leading the charge for the Cyclones is senior guard Ashley Joens who is averaging nearly 20 points a game (19.9) to go along with 9.3 rebounds.

3. Louisville Cardinals

Rounding out two of the last three spots are Lady Cardinal programs of Louisville and Stanford. While either can be slotted in at number three, the Louisville Cardinals land in the spot despite only losing two of their first 24 contests this season.

Entering play the week of February 14th, 2022 the Louisville Cardinals have won eight straight games including a 73-47 blowout of Notre Dame back on February 13th. In the year the Cardinals have won six games against Top 25 programs while having three of their last four against teams ranked.

2. Stanford Cardinals

Despite having one more loss than the Louisville Cardinals, the Stanford Cardinals find themselves slotted in at number two based on their timings of their losses, the roster depth and their overall schedule. After starting the season at 8-3, the Cardinals have won 14 straight contests including wins over two teams ranked at the time of meeting and five other programs who have spent time ranked in the Top 25.

The Cardinals currently have four different players averaging at least 11 points a game, three different players averaging at least five rebounds per game and four different players averaging at least two assists per game.

1. South Carolina Gamecocks

After landing all of the first place votes for the AP Women’s Top 25 rankings, it is easy to say the South Carolina Gamecocks are the top option for the number one spot on our Top 10 Women’s BB Teams rankings list. The team’s lone loss came back in December by one point in overtime to Missouri.

Since that loss the team has won 11 straight games including four wins against top 25 ranked programs while adding to their total of 10 wins against Top 25 ranked programs. This group of wins includes wins against two teams ranked 2nd, one team ranked 8th and one team ranked 9th. Aliyah Boston continues to play at an All-American level while leading the Gamecocks to the top of the SEC. Boston is leading the team averaging 17.1 points a game to go along with 11.9 rebounds per game.
