NCAA Women’s Basketball Predictions 2023-2024

The start of the 2023-2024 NCAA Women’s basketball season is just around the corner with the opening tip off set for early November. As the women’s teams prepare for the upcoming season the big question early is which team has the talent to compete with the LSU Tigers for the National Championship. With the game of women’s basketball at an all-time level, the college basketball landscape is full of talent including the LSU Tigers who are led by returning star Angel Reese. In addition, the Tigers landed talented transfer Hailey Van Lith and Aneesah Morrow to help bolster the roster while securing the top spot among the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Rankings 2023-2024 Preview list.

Reese and the Tigers are coming off a magical 2022-2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball season capping it off with an NCAA Championship. In her first season with the Tigers last season Reese was spectacular, averaging 23 points per game to go along with 15.4 points and 2.3 assists per game.

Joining the Tigers among the best women’ college basketball teams entering the upcoming 2023-2024 season are the UConn Huskies, Iowa Hawkeyes, UCLA Bruins, and South Carolina Gamecocks. Here is a look at the Top 10 NCAAW Teams 2023-2024 Rankings Preview:

Honorable Mention

Tennessee Lady Volunteers

Conference: SEC

Just missing the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Rankings 2023-2024 Preview list is the Tennessee Lady Volunteers who received great news during the offseason with the return of Rickea Jackson to their roster.

Jackson who elected to return for her fifth year, is coming off a season averaging 19.2 points per game while being an anchor within the Volunteers rotation.

The big question mark holding the Lady Volunteers outside of the Top 10 is at the guard position and whether or not the team has a replacement for Jordan Horston who went to the WNBA.

The incoming transfer Destinee Wells adds a potential replacement for Horston while sophomore guards Talaysia Cooper and Edie Darby may be expected to produce at a higher level this season.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Conference: ACC

Another NCAA Women’s basketball team fighting to jump into the top 10 teams is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Despite having a deep roster, the Fighting Irish success will possibly evolve around the health of Olivia Miles who battled a knee injury at the end of last season.

Miles is as versatile of any guards in college basketball while being effective on both ends of the floor. The Fighting Irish junior is coming off a season averaging 14.3 points to go along with 7.3 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game.

In addition, Miles will get another added weapon this season with McDonalds All-American Hannah Hidalgo joining the roster while providing another weapon at the guard position.

Top 10 College Basketball Women’s Rankings

10. Indiana Hoosiers

Conference: Big Ten

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Rankings 2023-2024 Preview is the Indiana Hoosiers. Leading the Hoosiers is fifth year senior Mackenzie Holmes. Another Big Ten team expected to compete during the upcoming season.

Over the years we have seen many of the top teams in the country carried by a single star and that is the case with Holmes who is coming off a dynamic season on the hardwood.

Holmes will enter the upcoming season coming off averaging a career high 22.3 points per game to go along with 7.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.

The addition of Sharnecce Currie-Jelks adds another added scoring weapon who is coming off averaging 15.2 points per game while junior guard Chloe Moore-Mitchell will take over the point guard roll after averaging nearly five assists per game (4.8) last season.

9. Ohio State Buckeyes

Conference: Big Ten

As you look around at the top conferences in women’s basketball the Big Ten are loaded with talent including the Ohio State Buckeyes who might be even better than advertised during the upcoming season.

The Buckeyes are built around their defense and that defense should be even better for the upcoming season after landing Celeste Taylor from the Duke Blue Devils who is coming off the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award.

The Buckeyes will also return Jacy Sheldon who battled injuries last season while sophomore Cotie McMahon has the shooting abilities to rank among the best shooters in the country this season.

8. Virginia Tech Hokies

Conference: ACC

The Virginia Tech Hokies enter the 2023-2024 season expecting to compete for the ACC Championship while also competing with the best women’s college basketball teams all season.

After their deep run to the NCAA Final Four last season, question marks surrounded the team however with the return of Elizabeth Kitley, the Hokies have now returned as a favorite in the ACC while joining the top 10 ranked basketball teams.

The Hokies also return Georgia Amoore and Cayla King while also adding multiple talented freshman’s including forward Carys Baker and guard Makenzie Nelson

7. Maryland Terps

Conference: Big Ten

Led by stellar head coach Brenda Frese the Maryland Lady Terps continue to be a dynamic women’s basketball program that competes year in and year out. The same is said for the upcoming 2023-2024 season despite losing Diamond Miller to the WNBA.

While it has been difficult to see former star Angel Reese dominate with the Tigers, the Terps have moved on with another strong roster to compete for the upcoming season.

Headlining the Terps roster this season is the talented sophomore guard Shyanne Sellers who is coming off a season averaging 13.9 points per game along with 4.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.

If the talented sophomore can take her game to the next level along side incoming transfer Jakia Brown-Turner and Lavender Briggs the Terps should contend for another Big Ten Championship.

6. Utah Utes

Conference: PAC 12

Fresh off a strong 2022-2023 NCAA Women’s basketball season including winning the PAC 12 championship, the Utah Utes enter the upcoming season as a favorite to win the conference for a second straight season.

Led by junior forward Alissa Pili who has the talent to compete for the National Player of the Year honors as well as an All-American, the Utes have a strong team to compete. Pili is coming off a season in which she averaged 20.7 points per game to go alongside 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

The addition of talented guard Matyson Wilke who transferred from Wisconsin alongside Jenna Johnson and Gianna Kneepkens who both averaged double figures and the Utes have a roster to compete with the best teams in the country.

5. South Carolina Gamecocks

Conference: SEC

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 NCAAW Teams 2023-2024 Rankings Preview is the South Carolina Gamecocks.

While it is hard to right off the Gamecocks even with the departure of Aliyah Boston to the WNBA, the upcoming season could be a difficult one for head coach Dawn Staley.

The Gamecocks will turn to Kamilla Cardoso who is expected to see additional playing time with Boston in the WNBA while transfer Te-Hina Paopao delivers the Gamecocks a dynamic playmaking guard who can score (13.1 ppg) as well as rebound (4.2) and find her open teammates (3.3 apg).

Add in the second ranked freshman class featuring MiLaysia Fulwiley, Sahnya Jah, and Tessa Johnson to help retool and reshape their roster.

4. UCLA Bruins

Conference: PAC 12

One team that might be getting overlooked among the best women’s college basketball teams is the UCLA Bruins who have as talented of a roster as many while also having the depth to compete.

After securing the best recruiting class last year led by incoming guard Kiki Rice, expectations are set high for the Lady Bruins during the upcoming season. Rice is coming off a strong rookie season averaging 11.6 points per game to go along with 4.5 rebounds and three assists per game.

In addition, the return of Charisma Osborne who elected to return to school for an additional season delivers a dynamic tandem at the guard position while ranking among the best back courts in women’s basketball.

However, the biggest addition come in transfer Lauren Betts who elected to transfer in from the Stanford Cardinals who could provide the team with a dynamic big women who can control down by the rim.

3. Iowa Hawkeyes

Conference: Big Ten

Anytime you have the National Player of the Year returning to your roster you can expect to be ranked among the best teams in the country. That is the case for the Iowa Hawkeyes who will be returning Caitlin Clark to their roster as they look to make another postseason run.

Entering the season Clark will be a candidate alongside Angel Reese of the LSU Tigers to take home the player of the year award. Despite losing talented center Monika Czinano the Hawkeyes return enough talent with Gabbie Marshall and Kate Martin to take on bigger returns along with Hannah Stuelke who is expected to take another big step forward.

Nonetheless the Hawkeyes success starts and ends with Clark who has averaged at least 26 points per game in her first three seasons.

2. UConn Huskies

Conference: Big East

Year in and year out the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team continues to put together top talented rosters to compete with the top teams in the country. The 2023-2024 UConn Huskies team is no different after battling injuries to multiple key weapons last season.

With the return of healthy guard Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd both playing a full season while other top stars including Aubrey Griffin, Aaliyah Edwards and Nika Mühl will add depth to compete with any of the top teams in the country.

The big question mark for the Huskies is whether or not potential player of the year candidate Bueckers can stay healthy for the entire NCAA Women’s basketball season.

1. LSU Tigers

Conference: SEC

In at number one on the Top 10 NCAAW Teams 2023-2024 Rankings Preview list is the reigning National Champions the LSU Tigers. It is hard not to like the potential of the Tigers who are coming off an impressive run during the 2022-2023 Women’s Basketballs season ending in a championship.

The Tigers return an impressive group of talented players including Angel Reese along with Flau’jae Johnson and Kateri Poole while also landing Hailey Van Lith and Annesah Morrow via the transfer portal.

Van Lith delivers a talented guard who can run the offense while Morrow is as good of a scorer as any in the country after averaging 25.7 points per game. In addition, the Tigers landed the top overall recruiting class a class that features Mikaylah Williams.

How would you rank these women’s college basketball teams for the 2023-2024 season? Rank below to be added in the NCAA Power Rankings.
