Ranking the best Black MMA Fighters of All Time in honor of Black History Month with Jon Jones, Demetrious Johnson, and more

Since Black History Month is originally an American holiday we only ranked fighters that are only Black American/African American. So this excludes Black UFC Fighters around the globe such as Anderson Silva, Kamaru Usman, Francis Ngannou, and many more. 

Before we move on to the actual top 10 list, here are some fighters who deserve honorable mention.

Honorable Mention

Kevin Lee

Kevin Lee is an excellent fighter, with a record of 19-7. He is also a former UFC interim lightweight title challenger and won multiple post fight bonuses.

Angela Hill

Angela “Overkill” Hill is the first female African American to compete in the UFC. The currently active fighter has a record of 15-12. She also deserves an honorable mention.

Kevin Randleman

Title(s):

  • UFC Heavyweight Champion (1x Defended)

Kevin Randleman was an American mixed martial artist and former NCAA Division I wrestler. He had a professional fight record of 17 wins and 16 losses and was a former UFC Heavyweight champion. He also deserves an honorable mention.

Din Thomas

Din Thomas is an American MMA Fighter and former professional boxer with a professional MMA record of 26 wins and 9 losses with 1 draw. He is a veteran of the sport, having competed in organizations such as the UFC and Bellator.

Din Thomas has notable wins over Matt Serra, Clay Guida, and Jeremy Stephens.

Curtis Blaydes

Curtis Blaydes is an American MMA Fighter with a professional fight record of 17 wins and 3 losses. He is a top-ranked heavyweight in the UFC and has impressive wins over Alexey Oleynik, Mark Hunt, Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos, Alexander Volkov, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, and Tom Aspinall.

10. Anthony Johnson

Anthony Johnson is an American MMA Fighter who has a professional record of 23-6. 

He is a former UFC light heavyweight title contender, having come close to winning the title on multiple occasions. Johnson is known for his powerful striking and has notable wins over Phil Davis, Alexander Gustafsson, Ryan Bader, Jimi Manuwa, and Glover Teixeira.

Anthony Johnson passed away last year in November.

9. Derrick Lewis

Derrick Lewis is an American mixed martial artist with a professional fight record of 26 wins and 10 losses. 

He is a former UFC Heavyweight title challenger and has won the UFC Performance of the Night award on multiple occasions. He also holds the record for the most knockout wins in the UFC Some of his notable wins include victories over Marcin Tybura, Curtis Blaydes, Francis Ngannou, Alexander Volkov, Aleksei Oleinik, and Travis Browne.

Lewis lost his most recent fight against Sergei Pavlovich and there is no announcement about his next fight.

8. Jamahal Hill

Jamahal Hill is an American mixed martial artist who has a professional record of 12-1-1.

“Sweet Dreams” is the youngest on this list born in 1991. It took his 6th fight to be noticed by the UFC when he competed on the Dana White Contender Series winning by TKO. Since then he has went 6-1-1 in the UFC with notable wins such as Johnny Walker, Thiago Santos, and Glover Teixeira.

His win over Teixeira won him the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Title becoming the first fighter to become a champion coming out of the Dana White Contender Series.

7. Quinton Jackson

Title(s):

  • Bellator Season 10 Light Heavyweight Tournament Champion

Quinton Jackson is an American mixed martial artist who has a professional record of 38-14.

He is a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion with one title defense. Rampage made a name for himself fighting for the Pride Fighting Championship before entering the UFC. Known for his outstanding knockouts via slams, punches, and knees he was a fan favorite in Japan just as much as he was in the United States. 

He also won the Bellator Season 10 Light Heavyweight Tournament as well. Notable wins include Kevin Randleman, Murilo Bustamante, Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva, Dan Henderson, and Lyoto Machida.

6. Rashad Evans

Rashad Evans is an American mixed martial artist who has a professional record of 20-8. 

He is a former UFC light heavyweight champion. He won the title in 2008 after defeating Forest Griffin. Evans also won The Ultimate Fighter 2 Heavyweight Tournament. Rashad Evans has notable wins over Michael Bisping, Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Phill Davis, Forrest Griffin, Dan Henderson, Quinton Jackson, and Chael Sonnen. 

Rashad Evans retired in 2018 but came back for a fight in Eagle FC last year.

5. Benson Henderson

  • UFC Lightweight Champion (3x Defended)

Benson Henderson is an American mixed martial artist who has a professional record of 30-11.

He is a former UFC and WEC lightweight champion. He won the UFC title in 2012 and successfully defended it three times. Henderson has notable wins over Clay Guida, Frankie Edgar, Gilbert Melendez, and Nate Diaz.

Henderson now fights in Bellator, where he has had impressive wins against Patrício Pitbull, Adam Piccolotti, and Myles Jury. He defeated Peter Queally in his most recent fight, and his next fight has not been announced yet. 

4. Tyron Woodley

Tyron Woodley is an American MMA Fighter who has a professional record of 19-7-1. 

He is a former UFC welterweight champion, having won the title in 2016 after defeating Robbie Lawler. Woodley Defended the title 4 times and has notable wins over Kelvin Gastelum, Carlos Condit, Stephen Thompson, Demian Maia, and Darren Till. 

Tyron Woodly retired from MMA in 2021.

3. Daniel Cormier

Daniel Cormier is an American MMA Fighter and former Olympic Wrestler who has a professional MMA record of 22-3. 

He is a former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion and held both titles at the same time as well. He became the first UFC fighter to win and defend world titles in two weight classes. Cormier is known for his exceptional wrestling and has notable wins over Roy Nelson, Dan Henderson, Alexander Gustafsson, Anderson Silva, Stipe Miocic, Derrick Lewis, and Anthony Johnson,

Cormier Retired in 2020 and now works as a commentator and MMA Analyst.

2. Demetrious Johnson

  • UFC Flyweight Champion (11x Defended)

  • ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion

  • ONE Flyweight Champion

Demetrious Johnson is an American MMA Fighter who has a professional record of 31-4-1.

He is a former UFC flyweight champion and the current One Flyweight champion. He won the UFC title in 2012, and made the record for most consecutive title defenses in the UFC, by defending the flyweight title 11 times. Demetrius Johnson has notable wins over Joseph Benavidez, John Dodson, Kyoji Horiguchi, Tim Elliott, Wilson Reis, and Henry Cejudo.

Demetrious Johnson now fights in ONE, and there is no official announcement about his next fight.

1. Jon Jones

Jone Jones is widely regarded as the best MMA fighter ever. He has a record of 26 wins and only 1 loss, which came by disqualification. 

Jones has held the UFC light heavyweight title multiple times and defended it 11 times in total. Jones has wins over some of the best in the division, including Daniel Cormier, Glover Teixeira, Mauricio Rua, Ryan Badar, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, Alexander Gustafsson, and Dominick Reyes

Jones has been inactive for a while, however, he is expected to make a comeback this year.
