MLB Top 10 Best Second Basemen 2023 Rankings

Ranking the best Second Basemen of Major League Baseball as Luis Arraez leads the way

The first two plus months of the 2023 MLB season is nearly in the bag as the month of May slowly comes to an end. As the action on the baseball diamond continues to heat up, the bats continue to come alive as players continue to put together strong performances to start the 2023 schedule.

This includes the top Major League Baseman second baseman’s who are putting together strong seasons to start. One of those top second baseman’s landing at the top of the Top 10 Second Baseman 2023 Rankings list is Luis Arraez of the Miami Marlins.

The Marlins second baseman currently leads all of Major League Baseball with a .376 batting average to start the season. Over 181 at bats to start the season Arraez has picked up 68 hits while striking out just 10 times to start the 2023 MLB season.

Joining Arraez among the best second baseman’s in baseball includes Marcus Semien of the Texas Rangers, Ozzie Albies of the Atlanta Braves, Ryan McMahon of the Colorado Rockies, and Brandon Drury of the Los Angeles Angels. Here is a look at the Top 10 Second Baseman MLB 2023 Rankings. 

Honorable Mention

Nico Hoerner

Team: Chicago Cubs

Landing just outside of the Top 102nd baseman in the MLB currently is the Chicago Cubs 26-year-old second baseman Nico Hoerner. Hoerner, who has spent time at the Majors in each of the four previous seasons, is coming off his first full season in 2022.

Last season Hoerner posted a .281 batting average over 481 at bats including 22 doubles, five triples, and 55 runs batted in. To start the 2023 MLB season the Cubs second baseman is hitting .285 over his first 193 at bats with 55 hits including eight doubles, one triple and three home runs while driving in 25 runs. 

Adam Frazier

Team: Baltimore Orioles

In need of a veteran bat and second baseman during the offseason the Baltimore Orioles added Adam Frazier to their team and lineup. The move has paid off for one of the hottest teams in baseball as the veteran Frazier has provided leadership and solid play to start the season.

The Orioles second baseman is batting .242 on the season with 40 hits over his first 165 at bats including seven doubles and six home runs. Frazier has also added six stolen bases, 23 runs batted in, and 28 runs scored.

Top 10 Second Basemen

10. Ketel Marte

Team: Arizona Diamondbacks

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 MLB Second Basemen 2023 Rankings is the Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte.

Marte currently ranks tied for 7th among MLB second baseman’s with 55 hits to start the season while also adding a .282 batting average over his first 195 at bats.

The Diamondbacks second baseman has added eight doubles, four triples, and seven home runs to start the 2023 MLB season. In the field Marte ranks tied for 8th with a .4 Defensive Wins Above Replacement (DWAR) mark.  

9. Gleyber Torres

Team: New York Yankees

It seems as if Gleyber Torres of the New York Yankees has been around forever, however Torres entered the 2023 MLB season just 26 years old while having appeared in each of the five previous seasons dating back to the 2018 MLB season.

Torres has hit at least 24 home runs in three of those five previous seasons to go along with at least 76 runs batted in. To start the 2023 MLB season, Torres is currently hitting .265 over his first 204 at bats including eight doubles, one triple, and nine home runs. To go along with those numbers Torres has scored 36 runs on the year, stole five bases, and posted a .446 slugging percentage.

8. Jonathan India

Team: Cincinnati Reds

The third-year shortstop of the Cincinnati Reds entered the season coming off back to base seasons producing at least 15 doubles and 10 home runs.

The success has been there to start 2023 as Jonathan India looked to pass his previous performances including posting a career high .290 batting average over his first 200 at bats of the season.

In addition to the .290 batting average, India has posted a .376 on base percentage to go along with 44 runs scored, 58 total hits, 15 doubles and five home runs to go along with 24 runs batted in. The Reds second baseman currently ranks 7th in batting average, tied for 1st in doubles, and 9th in runs batted in among all MLB second baseman’s.

7. Thairo Estrada

Team: San Francisco Giants

One MLB second baseman putting together a strong 2023 MLB season is the San Francisco Giants 27-year-old second baseman Thairo Estrada.

Estrada who is coming off a 23 double and 14 home run season last season is currently batting .301 on the year over his first 193 at bats.

Over those at bats the Giants second baseman has picked up 12 doubles, one triple and six home runs while driving in 17 runs on the season. In addition to his ability to hit for a solid average, the Giants second baseman currently ranks 2nd in stolen bases with 13 among all second baseman.

6. Bryson Stott

Team: Philadelphia Phillies

When looking at top tier second baseman in Major League Baseball during the 2023 MLB season it is hard to look past Bryson Stott of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Stott who is just 25 years old during the 2023 MLB season is appearing in his second full season with the Phillies after playing in 127 games last season.

The Phillies second baseman has been strong to start the season while posting a .292 batting average to start the season. Over that stretch Stott has posted 10 doubles and five home runs while scoring 21 runs and driving in 21 runs to start the MLB season.

5. Brandon Drury

Team: Los Angeles Angels

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 MLB Second Baseman 2023 Rankings is the Los Angeles Angels veteran second baseman Brandon Drury.

The 30-year-old veteran second baseman who has bounced around the majors since arriving during the 2015 MLB season has secured every day playing time with the Angels this season. 

The move has paid off for the Angels as Drury ranks among the best producing second baseman’s this season. In 50 games this season Drury is batting .249 on the year with 13 doubles and nine home runs while also driving in 27 runs to start the season.

4. Ryan McMahon

Team: Colorado Rockies

Another MLB second baseman putting together a strong 2023 MLB season is the Colorado Rockies second baseman Ryan McMahon. McMahon entered late May 2023 tied for 4th in home runs with eight among all second baseman.

In addition to home runs, McMahon has posted a .253 batting average on the year while picking up 48 hits over his first 190 at bats to start the season.

McMahon also is currently tied for the lead with Jonathan India among all second baseman with 15 doubles to start the season. McMahon has also added 31 runs batted in and scored 28 runs to start the season.

3. Marcus Semien

Team: Texas Rangers

When it comes to the top three second baseman’s in baseball each are well deserving of a mention including the Texas Rangers Marcus Semien.

Semien, who signed a long-term deal with the Rangers during the MLB offseason leading into the 2022 MLB schedule, is off to a hot start in 2023.

The Rangers second baseman is currently batting .298 on the year with 65 hits over his first 218 at bats. Among those 65 hits, Semien has picked up 13 doubles, two triples, and eight home runs while driving in 44 runs. Semien currently leads all second baseman with a 3.2 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) mark as well as the second highest Defensive Wins Above Replacement (DWAR) mark with a 1.0 mark.

2. Ozzie Albies

Team: Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves currently rank among the best teams in the National League while a long list of Braves currently rank among the top players in baseball.

One of those players is the Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies. Albies currently leads all second baseman in home runs with 10 while also ranking 2nd in runs batted in with 34 over his first 208 at bats of the season. In addition, Albies has posted a .255 batting average to go along with a 1.0 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) mark. 

1. Luis Arraez

Team: Miami Marlins

In at number one on the Top 10 MLB Second Baseman 2023 Rankings is the Miami Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez. Arraez continues to rank among the best overall hitters in baseball while leading all of baseball with a .376 batting average to start the season.

Currently the Marlins second baseman has added 11 doubles, one triple, and one home run while also driving in 20 runs on the year. Arraez ‘play on the field has landed him 3rd among second baseman while posting a 2.1 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) mark. In addition, Arraez has posted just 10 strikeouts over his first 181 at bats while posting a .433 on base percentage mark.
