Top 10 Best NHL Teams Right Now

The Four Nations break is officially coming to an end as NHL teams get back on the ice and look to face off once again this weekend. Almost every NHL team had one player in the tournament, except for one, the Washington Capitals did not have a single player in the tournament. So the second-best team in the NHL, had two weeks off. With most of the NHL rested and ready to go, here are the Top 10 Best NHL Teams 2024-2025 Rankings. But first, here are the Honorable Mentions.

Honorable Mention

New Jersey Devils

Previous Ranking: 3

The honorable mention goes to the New Jersey Devils, who are on a rebound season after finishing outside of the playoffs last season. Despite not cracking the top ten, they are having a great season.

Currently, sitting third in the Metro with a record of 31-20-6. Some of this success can be attributed to newcomer Jacob Markstrom in net who has played 36 games for the Devils, with a GAA of 2.10 and a SV% of .912.

Top 10 Best NHL Teams 2025 Rankings

10. Colorado Avalanche

Nathan-MacKinnon

Previous Ranking: 10

The roster of this Colorado Avalanche team today is almost unrecognizable from the beginning of the season, as they have traded both of their goalies and superstar wing, Mikko Rantanen. Despite the changes, the Avalanche are still competitive.

They currently sit at 10th in the NHL with a record of 33-22-2 for 68 points, holding the first Wild Card in the Western Conference. The Avs are led in points by Nathan MacKinnon, who has 21 goals and 66 assists for 87 points in just 57 games.

9. Toronto Maple Leafs

Auston-Matthews

Previous Ranking: 6

The Toronto Maple Leafs are still in their window of being competitive, but there are still fears that the roster may be very top-heavy. This team was well represented at the Four Nations, with both Auston Matthews and Mitchell Marner playing key roles for USA and Canada respectively.

The team is being led in points by Mitch Marner, as Auston Matthews has dealt with injury. Marner has 16 goals and 55 assists in 71 games. Toronto finds itself at 3rd in the Atlantic with a record of 31-20-4.

8. Minnesota Wild

Kirill-Kaprizov

Previous Ranking: 5

The curious case of the Minnesota Wild. The team is usually very competitive in a tough central division but does not find itself getting far into the playoffs.

Currently, they sit two points ahead of Colorado, holding 3rd in the Central Division with a record of 33-19-4. The Wild are currently finding scoring up and down their lineup, but primarily from Kirill Kaprizov, who is nearing the end of his contract in Minnesota.

7. Carolina Hurricanes

Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention

The Carolina Hurricanes are the Maple Leafs of the Metropolitan Division, they are competitive all season, then fall short in the playoffs. The Hurricanes hold the second place in the Metro, 10 points behind the Caps, with two points over the Devils.

Currently, with a record of 33-19-4. They made a huge splash, bringing in Mikko Rantanen from Colorado, who leads the team in points with his scoring in Colorado.

6. Florida Panthers

Matthew-Tkachuk

Previous Ranking: 7

The Florida Panthers have definitely taken a step back from their Stanley Cup season of last, but that is to be expended as players leave the team for greener pastures. That being said, they do lead the Atlantic Division and are second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 34-20-3.

They are being led in points by Sabres legend Sam Reinhart, who has 31 goals and 31 assists for 62 points in 57 games this season. The Panthers still have their 1A and 1B in net with Sergei Bobrovsky and a healthy Spencer Knight.

5. Vegas Golden Knights

Previous Ranking: 2

The Golden Knights took a huge blow at the Four Nations with defenceman Shea Theordore breaking his wrist, who leads all their defenders in points with 48 in 55 games. This will be a massive whole for them to fill, but their defensive core is relatively deep for a team who is always in the mix.

Vegas holds down the number two spot in the Pacific with 72 points and a record of 33-17-6. Yet another Sabres legend on this list, Jack Eichel leads the team in points with 19 goals and 50 assists in 55 games this season.

4. Edmonton Oilers

Connor-McDavid

Previous Ranking: 9

The Edmonton Oilers are looking to do what Florida did last season and win the Cup after losing in the Cup the year before. Edmonton took a loss to its depth with the help of two offer sheets from St. Louis, but this has not stopped them from leading the Pacific Division with a record of 34-17-4.

They are surprisingly not being led in points by Connor McDavid, who just sealed Gold for Canada a few nights ago, it is Leon Draisaitl. Draisaitl has 40 goals and 43 assists for 83 points in 55 games.

3. Dallas Stars

Previous Ranking: Unranked

The Dallas Stars are still looking for that secret sauce to take them to the next level and compete in the Stanley Cup final for the first time since 2020. Dallas does have a rather deep offensive with a perfect mix of veteran players, young players, and reclamation projects hitting at the right time.

They are currently being led in points by Matt Duchene, who has scored 22 goals and 33 assists for 55 points in as many games. The Stars are getting help up and down the lineup, which speaks to their record of 35-18-2, tied for second in the west.

2. Washington Capitals

Alex-Ovechkin

Previous Ranking: 4

Where did this Washington Capitals team come from? Going from a Wild Card team last year to a possible Presidents’ Trophy winner. Not only is this team the rebound of the early decade, but they also just had two weeks to rest and recharge as none of their players played in the Four Nations.

Dylan Strome currently leads the team with points with 54 in 55 games. The Caps currently sit second in the league with a record of 36-11-8 for 81 points.

1. Winnipeg Jets

Kyle-Connor

The Winnipeg Jets suffered a sole crushing defeat at the hands of Colorado last season, and battle with attendance during this, the door may be closing for the Jets in more ways than one.

Despite all the noise outside of the glass, the Jets are currently the best team in hockey, and a lot of that comes from Connor Hellebuyck who has a record of 34-7-0-2. Coming with that, he has a 2.06 GAA and a SV% of .925. The Jets currently have a record of 39-14-3 for best in the NHL.
