Top 10 Olympic Teams

10. Japan

The hosts come into the tournament having won the last four FIBA Asia championships, dominating in Asia. They are led by Nako Motohashi, the 27 year old point guard who was MVP of the 2019 FIBA Asia tournament.

The hosts will be looking to impress in front of a home crowd, and push deep into the tournament.

9. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has very little experience, having only played at one Olympic games and one world cup before.

They have a couple of very talented NCAA players, in India Pagan and Isalys Quinones. They are unlikely to do much in the tournament, but could be an interesting team to watch.

8. Nigeria

Nigeria comes into the tournament in excellent form, having won Afrobasket in 2017 and 2019 and getting to the quarter finals in the world cup in 2018.

The team will be pleased with an incredibly competitive game against the USA, losing by only three points. Nigeria has talent, but this tournament may be slightly too early for this young team.

7. Belgium

Belgium are making their Olympic debut in Tokyo and could be a big surprise package in this Olympics. WNBA star Emma Meeseman has taken the team from unranked into their first Olympic games. Having come third in EuroBasket earlier this year, the team can definitely impress in these Olympics.

6. France

France came second in 2012 and fourth in 2016. LA Sparks forward Gabby Williams leads the team, and center Sandrine Gruda brings a lot of experience to this team. France has a good chance of causing some upsets in this tournament, and a solid team could bring some form of silverware.

5. Serbia

The 2021 EuroBasket champions come into the tournament with possibly the best preparation of anyone, having beaten talented teams also in the Olympics like France, Spain and Belgium on their way to winning gold, led by Sonja Vasic the team could cause some problems, with their form hoping to lead them to a medal, to add to their bronze from five years ago.

4. Canada

Canada has never really been able to use their talent in the Olympics, with their highest finish being fourth back in 1984. Kia Nurse leads the team, and they will be hoping to improve with a talented roster that includes four current WNBA players and two young NCAA players. Despite some injuries, Canada will be aiming for medals at this games.

3. Spain

Despite a poor showing in the European championships earlier this year, the silver winning team from Brazil comes into the tournament with the aim of bringing home more silverware, having won medals at the last three women’s world cups. 41 year old Laia Palau brings a huge amount of experience into the tournament, and center Astou Ndour is a player to watch in the tournament.

2. Australia

The Aussies come into the tournament having missed out on a medal five years ago, breaking a streak of five Olympics where the team took home a medal. Their five WNBA players will look to impress in the tournament.

Losing Liz Cambage before the tournament was a huge loss to the team, and they may struggle to get past the USA without her. Australia still have an excellent chance of silverware and will look to add their fourth silver medal in the tournament.

1. USA

The strong favorites coming into the tournament, the USA comes into the tournament having won gold in the last six Olympics, all of which were won without losing a game.

The team hasn’t lost a game at the Olympics since 1992, and there is no reason why they can’t add to that now. Sue Bird leads an incredibly talented team that includes 2020 WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson and WNBA finals MVP Breanna Stewart. The team has incredible talent and should easily be able to steamroll this tournament.
